Candidates should normally have academic qualifications totalling 64 UCAS points, with the majority in relevant subjects.

Applicants can also enter with a relevant Level 3 Vocational Award

GCSE English, or equivalent is normally a requirement.

Applicants without formal entry qualifications but with relevant work experience will be considered for entry to the programme subject to an interview and appropriate diagnostic tests.

Disclosure and Barring Scheme: Candidates who do not already have a current DBS through their employment will need to apply for one. A DBS check and disclosure of convictions are course requirements, but having a clean DBS is not a condition of entry. Where a DBS disclosure raises issues, these will be discussed with the candidate and consideration given to their impact on the availability of placements and future employability. Entry Requirements

Open Course Overview

This programme has been designed for those people already working in the criminal justice sector who wish to upskill and enhance their knowledge, as well as for those people who wish to gain an insight into the nature of crime and the workings of the criminal justice system in order to pursue a career in the varied roles within the criminal justice sector. These include roles as a Probation Officer, Prison Officer or Youth Justice Worker.

The programme is available on a full-time basis over two years or a part-time basis over four years. Students will attend one day/evening per week for the full-time route and will undertake a placement of 120 hours per academic year alongside their academic studies, where they are not already in relevant employment.

Having successfully completed this programme students will have the opportunity to progress to a BA (Hons) top-up at the University of Cumbria.

With further study and ongoing professional development, students may wish to pursue careers in the police, prison service or probation service. Students may undertake employment in a variety of roles within the criminal justice sector such as within youth justice teams, victim support, family support services, rehabilitation services, central and local government agencies, charities working with offenders and victims of crime.

The online application process is really simple, once you have clicked the “apply now” you will be redirect to our application portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t applied with us previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.
Once your application has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.
