Overview of Course

During this short course, we will focus on key areas and skills to help your child ‘catch up’ and consolidate prior knowledge from their previous year at school. It will be full of opportunities for you, as a parent, to ask the tutor questions about how children are currently being taught in school. There will also be lots of ideas and resources available to further help you support your child at home. This is a parent only course (no children).

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

1. Identify current approaches to the teaching and learning of Maths in Year 2.
2. Define the meaning of key mathematical vocabulary.
3. Perform mathematical calculations using the methods that children utilise in KS1.
4. Identify terminology and strategies that relate to a variety of KS1 maths topics.
5. Identify own strengths and weaknesses in relation to their own maths skills
6. To explore a range of websites linked to maths skills relevant to Y2
7. To identify and carry out activities to support and maths topics and skills with your child
8. To develop your confidence on this course and identify further learning opportunities and aspirations.

Entry Requirements

In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 3 and above. Learners will also need a basic level of IT skills to be able to access the course and follow online instructions. If training or support is needed, please enquire about our free ICT courses.

Learners will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet device with access to the internet. 
All devices should have a camera, sound and a microphone so they are able to interact with their teacher and peers during the course.
The course will be delivered online using Zoom. Learners will be sent the join details and links prior to the course. This online platform can be accessed via an app on a smart phone, tablet or iPad or alternatively via the relevant website: https://www.zoom.us. There will be additional resources available for learners to access through the college’s Moodle VLE
All learners will need to enrol online prior to any course starting through the college’s online enrolment portal: https://enrol.lal.ac.uk/

How Your Course Will Be Assessed

Learners attend via the online platform Zoom on a set day and time. The sessions will be delivered live and learners will be supported to work through the course content. In addition to this, learners will be given access to Moodle (VLE – Virtual Learning Environment) so activities can be completed during and between sessions to record progress and achievement.

• The teacher will use a range of activities to review learner’s knowledge throughout the course and identify any gaps and additional information required
• Learners will receive written and verbal feedback in order to further develop their knowledge
• Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows you to identify how much you have learnt and where you might need to do further study or research.
• Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations.

Learners will be submitting work via Moodle (Virtual Learning Platform) wherever possible. The completion of learning mats / handouts is another option for those learners who may have difficulty accessing Moodle. These resources can be emailed by the teacher prior to the course or session.
There will also be additional interactive learning activities and games embedded in Moodle to support and further develop learners’ knowledge and skills.
