The Level 3 Qualification is for learners who are looking to broaden their practical and theoretical understanding of art, design and media practice as a bridging year in preparation for higher education. It is suitable for:
Learners who have prior learning at Level 3 within the creative sector, but wish to consolidate their learning further before progressing to H.E.
Adult learners with some creative experience, but without Level 3 qualifications.
The qualification provides the knowledge skills and understanding that will prepare learners for further study or training. The qualification will be delivered through two main phases Exploratory phase - learners will experiment with diverse media, materials and techniques, processes across specialist skill areas
Confirmatory phase - Learners produce a final major project culminating in a final exhibition
Learners taking this qualification will study one mandatory learning and teaching module covering six areas of learning:
• Investigation
• Experimentation
• Evaluation and review
• Realisation
• Communication
• Self-Directed practice
The final grade awarded represents an aggregation of the learner's performance across the qualification in that higher performance for some criteria can be balanced by a lower outcome in others (for example a distinction grade can be achieved through a combination of pass, merit and distinction across the assessment criteria)
The structure of the qualification is in keeping with current industry practice and university teaching. The completion of an extensive portfolio showcases learner's skills and knowledge to prepare them for progression. The breadth of study gives learners the opportunity to consider their practice in the context of professional practice with work from inception of ideas to completion. It offers the opportunity to experiment widely and take creative risks in order to develop a broad portfolio of work and professional behaviours required for progression to higher education and training or employment within the creative industries.
