The Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship provides the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to work in one of the UK’s most dynamic and advanced sectors. Engineering Technicians play a crucial role in industries such as aerospace, aviation, automotive, maritime defence, and advanced manufacturing, where they are involved in highly skilled, complex work.

As an apprentice, you will learn how to apply safe systems of working, while making technical contributions to a range of engineering functions. This could include the design, development, manufacture, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, or decommissioning of products, systems, or processes. You will also develop the ability to apply proven techniques and procedures to solve real-world engineering and manufacturing problems.

Training is designed to reflect industry standards, combining workplace learning with college-based technical instruction. By completion, you will be fully equipped to work as a qualified Engineering Technician across multiple sectors.
Health, Safety and Environmental Awareness – applying safe systems of work.

Manufacture and Production – applying proven techniques to engineering challenges.

The apprenticeship is delivered through a blend of on-the-job training in the workplace and off-the-job learning at college. In the workplace, you will gain practical experience in engineering tasks, guided by experienced professionals. At college, you will attend structured sessions focused on technical knowledge, practical skills, and industry standards.

Learning is supported by hands-on training in specialist workshops and labs, alongside classroom-based study. You will also receive regular workplace visits, mentoring, and progress reviews from Trainer Assessors, ensuring you apply your learning effectively to real engineering challenges and meet the requirements of the apprenticeship standard.
You will need to have achieved at least 5 GCSE passes at Grade 5 or above to enrol, including Maths and/or English.
Workplace observations to assess your technical skills and safe working practices

Written assignments and knowledge tests to demonstrate your understanding

Portfolio completion to showcase your achievements and progression

Regular progress reviews with your employer and Trainer Assessor

End Point Assessment (EPA) – conducted independently and including practical observation, a knowledge test, and a professional discussion

Completing the Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for a career in engineering and manufacturing. Typical roles include Engineering Technician, Maintenance Technician, Production Technician, or Design Technician, with opportunities across aerospace, automotive, maritime, and advanced manufacturing.

With further experience, you could progress into roles such as Senior Engineering Technician, Project Engineer, or Team Leader, or continue your studies through higher-level apprenticeships or qualifications such as HNC/HND in Engineering or a degree-level programme. This apprenticeship provides a long-term pathway into specialist, supervisory, and leadership roles in the engineering and manufacturing sector.
As an Engineering Technician apprentice, you will benefit from access to specialist engineering and manufacturing facilities. These include fully equipped workshops, laboratories, and IT suites with industry-standard tools, machinery, and software, designed to replicate real-world engineering environments.

The College’s strong partnerships with employers ensure that training remains up to date with sector requirements, while hands-on learning opportunities allow you to develop and refine technical skills. You will also have access to the Learning Resource Centre, providing technical texts, journals, and online databases to support your studies.
