Overview of Course

This free course (for Lancashire residents) will provide learners with the knowledge and basic lifesaving skills needed to assess and respond to a child or infant that is unresponsive and not breathing. The skills will include how to deliver cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a child and baby and how to access and use a defibrillator. Learners will also be able to recognise and treat choking. This course can be accessed either as a live online course or alternatively in a classroom face to face.

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:
1. Demonstrate how to perform a primary survey.
2. Demonstrate the correct technique for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for a child and baby.
3. Discuss how to access and use a defibrillator.
4. Recognise and respond to choking.
5. Access apps, websites for further learning.
6. Identify appropriate progression opportunities.

Classroom
In order to attend the course, learners should ideally be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 3 and above. Some practical activity is included which will need a level of mobility and active participation.
Online
Learners will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet device with access to the internet. All devices should have a camera, sound and a microphone so they are able to interact with their teacher and peers during the course.
The online version of the course will be delivered using Microsoft Teams and learners will be sent the join details and links prior to the course. This online platform can also be accessed via an app on a tablet or iPad as part of the Office 365 suite.

Learners can access the course planned to attend either in person in a classroom environment or live online.
During the session they will be learning in a variety of ways:
• Learning from their peers/teacher
• Sharing what has been learnt on the course
• Question and answering techniques
• Engaging in practical activities
• Actively listening, observing and discussing
• Completing documentation
• Accessing apps and websites for further learning opportunities

• The teacher will use a range of activities to review learner’s knowledge throughout the course and identify any gaps and additional information required
• Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge
• Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows them to identify how much they have learnt and where they might need to do further study or research.
• Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations.

Learners will be completing a learning mat to evidence progression which will be completed during the session. This can be emailed by the teacher prior to the session for those accessing the online version of the course.

Classroom
If learners are physically able to, there is an opportunity to practise CPR during this session which may involve kneeling on the floor. Learners must let the teacher know if they are unable to participate in the practical activities.
Learners are asked to wear appropriate clothing when participating in the practical floor activities.
Online
Please join the online course 15 mins before the planned start time.
A large cushion or firm pillow will be required for practising the child CPR techniques.
If learners have a doll or teddy these can used instead of a manikin when practising the correct techniques for smaller children and babies. Alternatively, a pillow or cushion can be used. The teacher will guide and assess learners during these activities.

• Basic Lifesaving Skills (classroom or online) - 1 sessions of 3 hours
• Essential First Aid Skills (classroom or online) - 3 sessions of 3 hours
• L3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid (face to face accredited) - 1 session of 6.0 hours

The online application and enrolment process is really simple, once you have clicked the “APPLY" or "ENROL” button you will be redirected to the portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t done so previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.
Once your applications has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.
At any point you can log back into the portal throughout the year, update information like your predicted GCSE grades, update contact and consent information and keep a live track of your application.
