Course Requirements

Intermediate Apprenticeship – 4 GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above (one in English or Maths) or equivalent.

Advanced Apprenticeship – 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above (one in English or Maths) or successful completion of an Intermediate Apprenticeship, or equivalent. These requirements are subject to change and may also differ to meet the needs of the employer.

As well as a College interview, progression onto an Apprenticeship is subject to an employer interview.

Don’t worry if you didn’t get the required grades, we can work with you to find a suitable route on to your Apprenticeship.

Please note that the College is only able to offer this course at the rates publicised on this website to those individuals aged 19+ or over on 31st August 2025 whose home address is in areas of England outside of the devolved authority areas of: Cambridge and Peterborough, Greater Manchester, Greater London, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, West Midlands and West of England. Where an individual resides outside of England or in one of the devolved areas then the College reserves the right to charge you for the delivery of the course at a rate of £11.75 per hour. This is in line with the College’s Fees Policy which is published on our websites.

Overview of Course

Working as a Chef is a highly skilled, practical career-path that is in demand all over the world. The catering industry as a whole contributes billions to the UK economy and is one of the biggest employers of young people in the UK.

Chefs are needed in every food establishment, from local pubs to silver service Michelin Star restaurants! In recent years, there has been a real focus on meals being made from scratch, so the demand for highly trained chefs is rising quickly.

Even though the catering industry is well-known for taking on new starters and providing excellent training, there are very few actual qualifications gained through on-the-job training.

With an Apprenticeship in Catering and Professional Cookery, you will gain the practical experience needed to progress, as well as the theory behind the dishes you create. Many of the new starters in this industry see it as a part-time role, so in completing an Apprenticeship, you will have a real advantage when it comes to progression.

Careers progression

A Catering and Hospitality Apprenticeship can open doors to a fantastic career! You could continue with your studies, undertaking degree level study at university after an Advanced Apprenticeship. Degrees such as Hotel Management, or Hospitality and Events Management are increasingly popular. You could also decide to study for a number of professional qualifications in your industry in order for you to progress within your career, or could take teaching qualifications in order to become a Catering Teacher.

The online application and enrolment process is really simple, once you have clicked the “APPLY" or "ENROL” button you will be redirected to the portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t done so previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.

Once your applications has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.

At any point you can log back into the portal throughout the year, update information like your predicted GCSE grades, update contact and consent information and keep a live track of your application.
