Please note that the College is only able to offer this course at the rates publicised on this website to those individuals aged 19+ or over on 31st August 2024 whose home address is in areas of England outside of the devolved authority areas of: Cambridge and Peterborough, Greater Manchester, Greater London, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, West Midlands and West of England. Where an individual resides outside of England or in one of the devolved areas then the College reserves the right to charge you for the delivery of the course at a rate of £11.25 per hour. Overview of Course

This course aims to teach learners how to make simple, affordable, recycled festive decorations to hang in their home over the festive period. A key focus of this course is also environmental sustainability, and learners will be encouraged to re-use items from around the home that have been saved from previous festive periods or other celebrations. Combine two or more materials/items to create a craft item or design

Create unique festive decorations to gift away or to use in the home

Make a festive card to send to a Lancashire Care Home - linked to the annual cards for kindness initiative

Evaluate the items created, sharing opinions and ideas

Entry Requirements

In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 3 and above.  

Manual dexterity is needed for this course in order to use scissors safely to make the decorations.

This course can be attended in a range of community venues or online via Microsoft teams or Zoom. If accessing online, learners will need a basic level of IT skills to be able to access the course and follow online instructions. If training or support is needed, please enquire about our free ICT courses: www.lal.ac.uk

Courses require a minimum of 5 learners and a maximum of 15 in order to be viable.

How Your Course Will Be Assessed

The course will be delivered face to face in a community venue, or live online through Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

All practical activities will be demonstrated by the teacher and learners will be supported to complete them throughout the session.

Please be aware this is a hands-on course and you will be asked to take part in practical craft activities.

Other activities include: 

Active listening and reflective discussion   

Participation in practical art activities during and between sessions 

Personal reflection and note taking 

Links to recommended websites and apps will be given to aid independent learning

The teacher will use a range of activities to review learner’s knowledge throughout the course and identify any gaps and additional information required  

Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge   

Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows you to identify how much you have learnt and where you might need to do further study or research.  

Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations. 

Discussion and sharing of your ideas and opinions is encouraged to support and develop one another’s learning journey.

Initial assessment to determine your starting point and experience in the subject

A Learning mat to record your learning journey.

Complete a short quiz to record your progress.

Additional information

The core materials for this course will be provided. It would be helpful if learners could also bring:

Toilet roll tubes x 2.

Old greetings cards.

Apron to protect clothes

Tray or box to take work home in.

Please be aware you will need to take all work home with you which may still be drying out.

In order for the course to start on time, it’s important to be ready to join your course 5 – 10 minutes prior to the official start time.

For all courses, it would be useful to have a pen and paper so you can make notes throughout the course.   

 The college has an Additional Learning Support Team who can support students with a variety of learning needs. If you have a diagnosed additional learning need, or feel you may need additional support in order to successfully complete this course, please speak to your course teacher upon enrolment.

The online application and enrolment process is really simple, once you have clicked the “APPLY" or "ENROL” button you will be redirected to the portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t done so previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.
Once your applications has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.
At any point you can log back into the portal throughout the year, update information like your predicted GCSE grades, update contact and consent information and keep a live track of your application.
