Please note that the College is only able to offer this course at the rates publicised on this website to those individuals aged 19+ or over on 31st August 2025 whose home address is in areas of England outside of the devolved authority areas of: Cambridge and Peterborough, Greater Manchester, Greater London, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, West Midlands and West of England. Where an individual resides outside of England or in one of the devolved areas then the College reserves the right to charge you for the delivery of the course at a rate of £11.75 per hour. Overview of Course

During the course, you’ll learn the fundamentals of rail track maintenance that you need to obtain a successful career on the rail. The course will introduce you to the typical operations and allow you to develop an extensive skill set to carry out various roles within the Rail Industry.

You must book onto an Information and Advice Session prior to starting the course.

• City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Rail Engineering Underpinning Knowledge
• Full set of Network Rail Approved PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
• Network Rail Approved Medical – Mandatory that this is attended and passed or won’t progress on the course – Necessary for PTS
• Network Rail Approved Drugs & Alcohol Screening – Mandatory that this is attended and passed or won’t progress on the course – Necessary for PTS
• Sponsorship paperwork including ID and right-to-work documentation – Necessary for PTS.
• E-Learning – Sent from your sponsor – Mandatory that this is completed and passed by the deadline of your PTS training
• Small Plant Training.
• Basic Hand Tools Training.
• First Aid and Manual Handling.

You will learn how to:
• Undertake routine maintenance of the permanent way.
• Carry out routine adjustments to permanent way assets.
• Prepare to undertake duties in the rail engineering industry.
• Carry out routine inspections of the permanent way.
• Assist in preparing resources for permanent way activities.
• Undertake replacement of permanent way assets and components.
• Restore track geometry to operational condition by the manual repair of permanent way assets.
• Prepare small plant, measuring equipment and tools for permanent way renewal or maintenance.
• Deal with incidents and contingencies within the railway environment.
• Lift and move permanent way materials, components and equipment.
• Restore plain line track geometry to operational conditions.

Entry Requirements

• No prior experience in the rail industry is required – however, if you’re reskilling from a trade or other career path, you’ll have developed a skill set that will stand you in good stead.
• The course is open to anybody over the age of 19 (as of 31st August 2022) who is unemployed and claiming an out-of-work benefit (this needs to be evidenced with recent payment information) or for those on a low income (less than £18,525 before tax) and can evidence this with wage slips or contract of employment. Evidence needs to be brought in during week 1.
• You need to have a current form of photographic identification (Passport/Driving Licence/Citizen Card – Accompanied with a birth certificate, if no passport) and proof of National Insurance (Letter, P60 or wage slip including name and address) – Necessary for Sponsorship paperwork and proof of Right To Work.
• You need to have a good level of written and verbal English skills to meet the demands of an NVQ Level 2.
• You need to be able to commit to attending full-time on the programme for the duration of the course.
• Criminal Convictions and ongoing investigations need to be disclosed, in advance – Not an instant barrier. Need to be assessed individually. Need to complete a criminal conviction declaration form and have this approved before attending the College site. Please speak to your probation officer. If you would be considered ‘high risk’ by your probation office, it is unlikely that you would be able to access the Brierfield and Accrington Programme

How Your Course Will Be Assessed

The NVQ and Tech Cert is 9:30-16:00 Monday-Friday for 6 weeks.
The PTS that follows is 8:30-17:00 for 2 weeks.
Learners must be able to commit to full attendance of all parts of the programme.

You will spend 16 days in a classroom setting.
You will spend 14 days on a track location for practical learning and skills assessments. These will take place at either Accrington College Campus or Preston Ribble Steam Railway, depending on your location.

The online application and enrolment process is really simple, once you have clicked the “APPLY" or "ENROL” button you will be redirected to the portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t done so previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.
Once your applications has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.
At any point you can log back into the portal throughout the year, update information like your predicted GCSE grades, update contact and consent information and keep a live track of your application.
