Overview of Course

We all need times in our lives when we can ‘press the pause button.’ The fast pace of society and the many demands on us can make us feel stressed, overwhelmed and exhausted.

This course will teach learners how to slow down and take time out, using different breathing techniques and relaxation methods to become calm and restful, resulting in reduced stress, increased energy and improvements to overall wellbeing.

The course is 5 hours in duration and is delivered over two individual sessions or weeks. This can be adapted to the group as required.

This is a practical and reflective course, enabling learners to evaluate which methods to include in their ‘just breathe’ toolkit for everyday usage and challenging situations. This in turn, will help others by encouraging them to press their own pause buttons, benefiting the community as a whole.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

· Describe the benefits of 'pressing the pause' button and making time for yourself

· Identify the parts of life where you need to 'just breathe' and create effective solutions

· Evaluate tools and practices and select the most effective for their 'just breathe toolkit'

· Establish a workable weekly plan and future goals to improve relaxation and wellbeing

Entry Requirements

In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 3 and above.

Learners will also need a basic level of IT skills to be able to access recommended resources. If training or support is needed, please enquire about our free ICT courses.

If joining online, learners will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet device with access to the internet. All devices should have a camera, sound and a microphone so they are able to interact with their teacher and peers during the course. The course will be delivered online using Zoom or Microsoft Teams and learners will be sent the join details and links prior to the course. Both of these online platforms can be accessed via an app on a smart phone, tablet or iPad or alternatively via the relevant website:

For online courses, learners will need to enrol online prior to any course starting through the college’s online enrolment portal: https://enrol.lal.ac.uk/

If the course is face to face, learners can enrol on the day.

How Your Course Will Be Assessed

The course will be delivered either at one of our community venues, or online. Please check details when enrolling.

The community venue will be in a location, where you can meet people face to face and learn together in a suitably equipped classroom setting.

Learning activities include:

• Active listening and reflective discussion  

• Participation in practical activities during and between sessions

• Personal reflection and note taking

• Completion of learning activities

• Links to recommended websites and apps will be given to aid independent learning

· The teacher will use a range of activities to review learner’s knowledge throughout the course and identify any gaps and additional information required

· Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge

· Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows you to identify how much you have learnt and where you might need to do further study or research.

· Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations.

· Discussion and sharing of your ideas and opinions is encouraged to support and develop one another’s learning journey.

You will be asked to complete a record of your learning to consolidate your new knowledge. This will be done either by hard copy or online (MS Forms). There will also be some worksheets (face to face) and other written exercises. Please ensure that you have a pen and paper/notebook with you.

Additional information

When attending online, so the course can start on time, it’s important to be ready to join your course 5 prior to the official start time.

The Additional Learning Support Team work across college supporting students with a variety of learning needs in different ways. Support can be requested at enrolment or at any point throughout your course, please speak to your course teacher.

Please note, all the teachers are knowledgeable about health and wellbeing but are not GP’s or medically trained. If you have a specific health condition, please speak to your GP in the first instance.
