Course Information
The Level 2 Ground worker Apprenticeship provides learners with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to work on construction sites, particularly in setting out and preparing the ground before building work begins. Groundworkers lay the foundations for buildings and infrastructure, install drainage systems, and prepare sub-surfaces for roads and pavements.
• Preparing ground and excavation for foundations
• Laying drainage, ducting, and concreting
• Setting out and working to drawings and specifications
• Operating plant and hand tools safely
• Installing kerbs, paving, and reinstating surfaces
• Health, safety, and environmental procedures on-site
• Communication and teamwork on a construction site
• Understanding sustainability and waste reduction in civil engineering
Apprenticeships are work based training programmes. Most of your time will be with your employer on the job, however you will be expected to complete off the job training at our campus.
Aged 16 or over and eligible to work in the UK
• Ideally, GCSE Grade 3 (D) or above in English and Maths
• Applicants without these qualifications will work towards Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths during the apprenticeship
• An interest in construction and civil engineering, strong work ethic, and physical stamina
• A minimum of 6 weeks' relevant work experience is preferred
• Regular progress reviews and on-the-job observations
• Completion of a work-based portfolio
• Knowledge assessments (written or digital)

End Point Assessment (EPA), which includes:
• Practical skills test
• Professional discussion supported by portfolio evidence
• Learners must wear appropriate PPE (e.g., safety boots, hi-vis clothing, hard hat) during all practical sessions
• Most tools and resources are provided, but learners may need to bring their own basic equipment
• Off-the-job training typically makes up 20% of the apprenticeship
• Additional support is available for learners with SEND or those needing help with Maths or English
• The role includes outdoor physical work, often in varying weather conditions and environments
