Overview of Course

Gardening and growing your own plants, vegetables and flowers can bring a wide range of health and wellbeing benefits. This course is a great way to develop a wide range of gardening skills to apply in work or your own garden. The course is suitable for complete beginners, through to those who would like to further develop their existing skills and knowledge.

This course is accredited, and you will need to complete a short workbook or Microsoft Form during or between sessions to accompany the practical activities.

By the end of the course, learners will:

1. Learn about gardens, plants and working in a garden setting
2. Recognise and remove weeds.
3. Propagate plants via cuttings
4. Prepare ground for planting
5. Learn about garden tools and how to maintain them
6. Design and plant up an area
7. Understand health and safety procedures in horticulture
8. Select appropriate next steps onto further learning opportunities

This course contains seven accredited units from Open Awards:

1. Personal Action Planning (E3)
2. Clearing and Weeding a Garden (E3)
3. Use and Maintain Garden Tools (E3)
4. Environmental Issues (E3)
5. Cultivating Plant Cuttings (E3)
6. Working in Horticulture (E3)
7. Introduction to Ground Preparation (E3)

These units are blended into the core content of the course and learners will create evidence for the unit's criteria by completing tasks and practical activities as planned by the course teacher.

Certification for this unit will be provided upon successful completion of the course.

Entry Requirements

In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 3 and above. Learners will also need a basic level of IT skills to be able to access the course and follow online instructions. If training or support is needed, please enquire about our free ICT courses.

Face to face courses require a minimum of 6 and maximum of 12 in order to be viable.

Sessions will be either in-person or online. Online learning will be completed through Zoom and learners will complete the course by independently working through a variety of assessment tasks, including:
• Tutorials
• Quizzes
• Reflecting on their own learning and experience
• Participating in discussion forums
• Complete practical tasks

• Completion of initial assessment tasks at the start of the course will enable learners to review their knowledge of the course content. At the end of the course learners will review their knowledge again to assess progress.
• Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations.
• Learners will receive feedback and information about further learning opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills.

All course work will be submitted through Zoom, Microsoft Forms or paper workbooks, Padlet and Email.
This course is accredited and it is important that you submit all completed work as evidence to the teacher by the end of the course in order to complete.

Additional information

Learners will need:

• Access to a garden, green space, allotment or outdoor area where possible.
• Access to a small range of gardening tools, and personal protective equipment although this is not necessary as some of this can be provided (in person courses.)

The online application and enrolment process is really simple, once you have clicked the “APPLY" or "ENROL” button you will be redirected to the portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t done so previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.
Once your applications has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.
At any point you can log back into the portal throughout the year, update information like your predicted GCSE grades, update contact and consent information and keep a live track of your application.
