Overview of Course

The aim of this programme is to support and prepare learners in gaining employment as a Mental Health Support Worker in a secure mental health setting part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust.

The course is designed to allow learners to understand what it takes to work in a Mental Health setting whilst supporting them to gain relevant qualifications for the role of a Mental Health Support worker.

As part of the programme, learners will complete short courses in a range of subjects to upskill and increase knowledge in sector-specific topics to improve opportunities for progression.

The design of the programme was in collaboration with LSCFT and Guild Lodge to create a programme that would prepare learners for stepping into the Health Care Assistant role. Staff from LSCFT will support employability sessions to give a valuable insight into the expectations of applicants and support them through the job application process. A two placement is included in the programme to experience the role and the environment of a mental health unit.

Over the course of the programme, learners will complete a main aim and a series of shorter subject specific subjects alongside, developing knowledge in the following areas:

Understanding Mental Health and a range of conditions

Duty of care in adult Health and Social Care

Roles and Responsibilities of a Care Worker

Understanding and managing conflict, anger and aggression

Equality and Diversity

Awareness of Protection and Safeguarding in a Health & Social Care setting

Employability Skills, including application and interview preparation

2-week placement and guaranteed interview for those who successfully complete the course.

Entry Requirements

In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Level 1 and above. Learners should have a basic level of IT skills to be able to access resources and research activities during workshop and self-study sessions.

All learners will complete an initial assessment (BKSB) at the start of the course to measure literacy skills to ensure the course is at the right level.

All learners will need to be able to independently travel to The Harbour, Preston New Rd, Blackpool FY4 4FE For the period of the course and the placement.

Support for the cost of public transport may be provided by the Job Centre.

Learners attend all sessions and engage in learning activities to support the learning outcomes. Learning will be structured towards completing both individual and group activities to increase knowledge and understanding which will be assessed using a range of methods.

Regular submission of work that will be assessed and reviewed weekly.

Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge

Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows them to identify how much they have learnt and where they might need to do further study or research.

Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on starting points, personal goals and career aspirations.

Learners accessing online learning/assessment can view their progress in the progress bars indicating what has been completed and what is still to submit.

Whether accessing assessment materials online or paper-based, learners will complete work associated with the course/qualification they are undertaking. This will be a range of activities from answering open questions, case studies, research activities and practical skills will be assessed throughout the programme. Some multiple-choice exams are also included in some of the subjects studied.

The programme is planned to run for 8 weeks.

Weeks 1-6: Class based sessions attending 3 days per week 10.00am – 3.00pm

Weeks 7-8: *Placement: 3 days each week, 10.00am – 2.30pm

*Learners who successfully complete the course in weeks 1-6 will be offered a placement on weeks 7-8 and interview for the Band 3 Mental Health HCA post following successful placement period.

As part of the programme, we will also fund the application of an Enhanced DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) Certificate, the mandatory requirement for working in any health or care environment, which includes your placement. You will be required to produce a number of ID documents to assist with the application, which will be discussed as part of your induction to the programme.

DWP will fund the upgrade to the online update service once your certificate arrives.

This course has now started and we can no longer accept applications online.

The online application and enrolment process is really simple, once you have clicked the “APPLY" or "ENROL” button you will be redirected to the portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t done so previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.
Once your applications has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.
At any point you can log back into the portal throughout the year, update information like your predicted GCSE grades, update contact and consent information and keep a live track of your application.
