Course Information
This 18 hour course is a regulated and nationally recognised qualification, specifically designed for those who are appointed to act as a first aider in their workplace. It is also ideal for people who have a specific responsibility to provide first aid in voluntary and community activities. Learners will develop the skills and knowledge needed to deal with a range of first aid situations. New topics include fractures, sprains, strains, spinal and chest injuries, head, spinal and eye injuries, poisoning, anaphylaxis, stroke, asthma, diabetes and more. Learners will complete practical assessments and multiple-choice theory papers to demonstrate competency, knowledge and skills in first aid at work.
- Carry out a primary survey.
- Demonstrate safe handling of an unconscious casualty.
- Deliver 2 minutes of effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation utilising an AED.
- Follow the 3 staged approach to relieve an obstructed airway.
- Recognise & respond to a casualty that is bleeding, in shock, burnt or having a seizure.
- Recognise & respond to a casualty with injuries to bones, muscles & joints, including suspected spinal & chest injuries.
- Recognise & respond to a casualty with eye injuries, sudden poisoning, anaphylactic shock, heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma or diabetes.
- Identify appropriate progression onto further learning opportunities.
You will learn in a variety of ways:
- Active listening and discussion
- Paired and group tasks
- Participation in practical exercises
- Personal reflection and action planning
- Access to Apps, websites and Moodle (Virtual Learning Environment) will be provided so you can complete some tasks during the session on-line, and access the resources after the session has ended to extend your learning.
- Research and peer teaching.
In order to attend this course you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Level 1 and above.
You will be asked to complete:
- An Individual Learning Plan
- Peer Assessment Sheets
- An online learner survey at the end of the course
- Practical assessments and 2 multiple-choice question papers
Please wear appropriate clothing to participate in the practical activities.
