Want to study A Level science but not quite ready yet? The Foundation Programme – Science Pathway is your stepping stone to success. In just one year, you’ll explore biology, chemistry, physics, and topics like applied science and scientific skills, all while building your confidence and study habits. With practical experiments, projects, and even an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), you’ll develop the skills universities and employers love. You’ll also work towards GCSE English or Maths if needed.

Passionate about science? This course will get you ready for A Levels and beyond.
Dream of studying science at A Level but need a stepping stone to get there? The Foundation Programme – Science Pathway is your launchpad to success. This one-year course is designed to build your confidence, strengthen your knowledge, and prepare you for A Levels in science subjects

You’ll study a broad mix of science, including biology, chemistry, physics, and topics like principles of applied science, chemistry in practice, earth and the universe, and scientific skills. You’ll also develop core skills in analysis, problem-solving, and practical investigation, giving you a strong base for advanced learning.

Assessment is a blend of written exams, practical work, and projects, so you’ll be tested in different ways—not just through one final exam. And if you didn’t achieve a Grade 4 in GCSE English or Maths, don’t worry. You’ll work towards these alongside your science modules, ensuring you’ve got the essential qualifications to move forward.

One of the highlights is the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), where you’ll carry out independent research on a topic of your choice. This is a brilliant chance to showcase your passion, build problem-solving skills, and prepare for higher-level study.

But this programme isn’t just about subject knowledge—it’s about confidence. You’ll grow your independent study skills, develop resilience, and gain the motivation you’ll need to thrive at A Level.

If you’re ambitious, passionate about science, and ready to take the next step, this course is your perfect pathway.
Each student on the A Levels Foundation Programme - Science Pathways - receives a personalised programme to address their individual goals and build confidence for future study.
4 GCSE passes at a minimum of Grade 3, which must include a Grade 3 in English Language and Maths.
On the Science Pathway, assessment is designed to build your confidence and prepare you for the challenge of A Levels. You won’t just be tested through one big exam—your progress is measured through a mix of written assignments, practical experiments, projects, and short tests. The highlight is the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), where you design and carry out your own research project on a topic you love. Alongside this, you’ll complete assessments in English and Maths (if needed), with regular feedback to keep you moving forward.
Studying the Foundation Programme – Science Pathway gives you the skills and confidence to progress onto A Levels in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics. This course is not just about preparing for exams—it is about developing curiosity, problem-solving, and practical skills that are essential for future scientific study. On completion, you may consider supported opportunities in areas such as laboratory support, healthcare assistance, or technical roles, where a basic understanding of science is valued.

The pathway is an excellent stepping stone to A Levels, and from there on to university. Degrees in Biomedical Science, Medicine, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or Environmental Science can lead to prestigious careers such as Doctor, Biomedical Scientist, Pharmacist, Engineer, Environmental Scientist, or Research Scientist. Some learners also progress into areas like Forensic Science, Genetics, or Sports Science, contributing to discoveries and innovations that shape the world.

Science is at the heart of solving global challenges and improving everyday life. Whether you aim to build confidence before moving onto A Levels, or progress further to university and professional careers, the Foundation Programme – Science Pathway provides the foundation you need for success.
