You’ll build a strong foundation in core health and science principles, from biology and microbiology to data management and person-centred care, before focusing on a specialist area that lets you develop practical, career-ready skills. With a substantial industry placement built in, you’ll leave with the knowledge, confidence, and real-world experience that employers and universities are looking for.

Science meets care — your future starts here.
Want to make a difference in healthcare while getting hands-on with real science? The T Level in Healthcare Science is your chance to explore the science behind patient care and prepare for a career where your skills can change lives.

The course begins with the core components, giving you a strong foundation in health and science principles. You’ll cover cell biology, genetics, microbiology, and immunology, learning how these concepts are applied in healthcare every day. You’ll also dive into good scientific and clinical practice, building the professionalism and ethics needed to work in a clinical or lab environment. Alongside this, you’ll study health and safety, data management, and person-centred care—essential skills for supporting patients and working in healthcare teams.

After building your core knowledge, you’ll move on to an occupational specialism, where you’ll focus on developing practical, career-focused skills in a specific area of healthcare science. This is your chance to apply what you’ve learned in a specialist setting, gaining the expertise and confidence needed to support healthcare professionals and patients effectively.

One of the highlights of the T Level is the industry placement—at least 45 days working with an employer. Here you’ll apply your knowledge in real healthcare or science settings, gaining valuable experience, confidence, and insights into your future career.

Equivalent to three A Levels, this qualification can lead to university courses in healthcare or science, higher apprenticeships, or skilled jobs in hospitals, laboratories, or community health services.

If you’re curious about science and passionate about helping others, Healthcare Science is the perfect path for you.
The Healthcare Science T Level is delivered through a combination of classroom study and practical experience. In college, you’ll learn core scientific knowledge alongside healthcare-specific topics. Lessons include lectures, seminars, lab-based experiments, and group work, giving you both theoretical understanding and technical skills. You’ll also complete a 45-day industry placement within a healthcare setting, gaining first-hand experience working with patients and professionals. This mix of academic learning and real-world practice equips you for university study or a career in healthcare.
To enrol on this course, you will need 5 GCSE passes at a minimum of Grade 4, which must include English Language or Literature and Maths at Grade 4.
Your learning will be assessed through two key components. First, the Core component, which includes an examination and an employer-set project (ESP). Together, these will determine your overall Core grade. Second, the Occupational Specialism component, where you'll complete synoptic assignments designed to demonstrate your skills and understanding, earning a distinction, merit, or pass. Additionally, you'll complete an industry placement to develop practical workplace skills.
Studying the Healthcare Science T Level sets you on the path to a rewarding and meaningful career in the health sector. This course is not just about theory—it is about developing the scientific, technical, and communication skills needed to support patients and improve lives. On completion, you will be ready to take your next steps into sectors such as hospitals, laboratories, community health, or medical research, where healthcare science plays a vital role.

The qualification is also an excellent springboard to university, leading to degrees in Biomedical Science, Healthcare Science, Nursing, Radiography, or Clinical Physiology. These can open the door to prestigious careers such as Biomedical Scientist, Clinical Scientist, Radiographer, Cardiac Physiologist, or Operating Department Practitioner. Some students also progress into specialist fields such as Genetics, Haematology, or Medical Imaging, contributing to advances in diagnosis, treatment, and patient care.

Healthcare science is one of the fastest-growing areas in the NHS and beyond, offering opportunities to work with cutting-edge technology and make a direct difference to people’s health. Whether your ambition is to work in research, diagnostics, or frontline care, the Healthcare Science T Level equips you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed.
