Are you ready to lay the foundations for your future? Our Level 1 Brickwork course is the ideal starting point for a successful career in the construction industry. Tailored for those new to the trade, this programme provides an outstanding introduction to the essential skills and knowledge of bricklaying. You’ll move from the classroom into our specialist workshops, learning hands-on from experienced tutors who are experts in their field. We are dedicated to providing a supportive and welcoming environment where you can develop your abilities with confidence.
Throughout the course, you will learn how to lay bricks and blocks to a line, a vital skill for any project. You will also master the fundamentals of health and safety within construction, ensuring you can work safely and effectively on any site. We will guide you through building basic structures, including half-brick and one-brick walls, corners, and cavity walls. This practical experience is complemented by the theory you need to understand construction technology and communicate effectively with colleagues. By the end of this course, you will have developed core competencies and gained a recognised qualification to progress onto an apprenticeship or further study, setting you well on the path to becoming a skilled tradesperson.
This course is designed to give you a thorough introduction to the world of bricklaying, blending practical skills with essential trade knowledge. You’ll roll up your sleeves in our purpose-built workshops, learning the techniques that professionals use every day on site. We focus on building your confidence and ability from the ground up.
You will master the fundamentals of the trade, including how to properly mix mortar and lay bricks and blocks with precision. Key practical modules cover constructing straight walls, corners, and more complex cavity walls. We also place a strong emphasis on health and safety, teaching you how to work responsibly and protect yourself and others in a construction setting.
Alongside the hands-on work, you’ll study units covering modern construction technology and effective workplace communication. You will learn to read and interpret basic construction drawings and understand the principles behind building durable and stable structures. This combination of practical skills and theoretical understanding ensures you’ll finish the course not just as a builder, but as a well-rounded tradesperson ready for your next step.
We believe the best way to learn a trade is by doing it. That’s why our Level 1 Brickwork course is built around a practical, hands-on approach. You’ll spend most of your time in our specialist, industry-standard workshops, designed to feel just like a real construction site. Here, you’ll put theory into practice, using the same tools and materials as professional bricklayers. This approach means you’re not just learning the concepts — you’re developing real-world skills and muscle memory from day one.
Your learning will be guided by our team of experienced tutors. These are trade experts who have spent years working within the construction industry, and they are committed to sharing their knowledge with you. They provide live demonstrations, offer one-to-one support, and foster a supportive, friendly atmosphere where no question is too small. Classroom sessions complement your practical work, covering key areas like health and safety regulations, construction principles, and how to read building plans. This well-balanced delivery ensures that you develop both the practical expertise and the technical understanding needed to excel in your future career. We’re here to support you every step of the way, providing all the resources and encouragement you need to thrive.
2 GCSE passes at a minimum of Grade 3, which must include a Grade 2 and 3 in English Language and Maths, in either combination.
We assess your progress in a way that reflects the real work you’ll do in the construction industry. Our aim is to ensure you feel confident and competent in your skills, not simply to test you. Assessment is continuous throughout the course, combining practical tasks with portfolio-based evidence. This approach gives you the chance to build a collection of work that showcases your growing abilities.
Most of your assessment will take place in the workshop. You’ll tackle a series of practical assignments, such as building a corner, constructing a cavity wall, or setting out a structure from a drawing. Our expert tutors will observe your work, assessing your technique, your attention to health and safety, and the standard of your finished product. They’ll provide instant feedback to help you improve.
In addition to hands-on tasks, you will complete some short written assignments and build a portfolio of your work. This portfolio will include photographs of your projects and written evidence of your understanding of topics such as health and safety and construction technology. There are no formal final exams; instead, your final grade is based on your consistent performance and successful completion of all practical and theoretical units. This approach ensures you are genuinely prepared for an apprenticeship or a job in the trade.
Completing the Level 1 Brickwork course opens the door to a wide range of opportunities within the construction industry. Skilled tradespeople are in high demand, and this qualification is your key first step towards a secure and rewarding career. You’ll be in an ideal position to progress onto a bricklaying apprenticeship, where you can earn as you learn on a real construction site, combining your practical skills with valuable paid experience. This is a well-established and direct route to becoming a fully qualified bricklayer.
Alternatively, you might choose to continue your education by progressing to a Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying. This will enable you to develop more advanced techniques and deepen your technical knowledge, further enhancing your career prospects. With a Level 1 qualification, you can also explore entry-level roles on site, such as a construction site worker or a hod carrier, giving you essential experience in the industry.
The skills you’ll gain are transferable and provide the foundation for many roles across construction. Whether you aspire to become a skilled bricklayer, a general builder, or even move up to site supervision in the future, this course offers you the perfect starting point to build an exciting and successful career.
