Course Requirements

In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in
English at Entry Level 3 and above. Learners will also need a basic level of IT skills to be able
to access the course and follow online instructions. If training or support is needed, please enquire
about our free ICT courses.
Face to face courses require a minimum of 6 and maximum of 12 in order to be viable.

Overview of Course

Gardening and growing your own plants, vegetables and flowers can bring a wide range of health and wellbeing benefits. However, for some, starting out can seem quite daunting, so this 3-week course is a perfect introduction to gardening and growing. You don’t need to have experience, or access to a garden because our expert teachers will adapt the content so you can experience the benefits, even if you only have a small yard or windowsill. The course is delivered 2.5 hours per session over 3 weeks.

What you will learn

This short course is accredited, and you will need to complete a short workbook or

Microsoft Form during or between sessions to accompany the practical activities.

By the end of the course, learners will:

1. Know about gardens, garden tools and how to care for equipment

2. Create a garden maintenance calendar for their garden.

3. Carry out garden maintenance tasks.

4. Understand the functions of parts of plants and trees.

5. Identify different trees and plants and the differences between them.

6. Select appropriate next steps onto further learning opportunities

This course contains three accredited units from Open Awards:

1. Recognise Trees and Plants (E3)

2. Introduction to Garden Maintenance (E3)
These units are blended into the core content of the course and learners will create evidence for the unit's criteria by completing tasks and practical activities as planned by the course teacher. Certification for this unit will be provided upon successful completion of the course.

How Your Course Will Be Assessed

Online learning will be completed through Zoom and learners will complete the course by
independently working through a variety of assessment tasks, including:
· Tutorials
· Quizzes
· Reflecting on their own learning and experience
· Participating in discussion forums
. Complete practical tasks

How will I know if I'm making progress?

Completion of initial assessment tasks at the start of the course will enable learners to review their knowledge of the course content. At the end of the course learners will review their knowledge again to assess progress.
· Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations.
· Learners will receive feedback and information about further learning opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills.

What coursework will I be expected to complete?

All course work will be submitted through Zoom, Microsoft Forms or Workbooks, Padlet and Email.
This course is accredited and it is important that you submit all completed work as evidence to the teacher by the end of the course in order to complete.

Additional information

Learners will need:
· Access to a garden, green space, allotment or outdoor area where possible.
· Access to a small range of gardening tools, and personal protective equipment although this is not necessary as some of this can be provided.

Careers progression

Following the completion of this course the following progression option are available: · E3 Practical Gardening Skills: Each week the tutor will cover a different subject within the remit of Horticulture. This may vary due to seasonality but will always include plant propagation, weed identification and control methods, use and care of tools used in horticulture. · Longer accredited courses in Practical Horticulture or Conservation – more information can be provided by your teacher, please enquire if you are interested. The online application and enrolment process is really simple, once you have clicked the “APPLY" or "ENROL” button you will be redirected to the portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t done so previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.

Once your applications has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.

At any point you can log back into the portal throughout the year, update information like your predicted GCSE grades, update contact and consent information and keep a live track of your application.
