Course Information
Gardening and growing your own plants, vegetables and flowers can bring a wide range of health and wellbeing benefits. However, for some, starting out can seem quite daunting, so this 3-week course is a perfect introduction to gardening and growing. You don’t need to have experience, or access to a garden because our expert teachers will adapt the content so you can experience the benefits, even if you only have a small yard or windowsill.

The course is delivered 2.5 hours per session over 3 weeks.
By the end of the course, learners will:

- Know about gardens, garden tools and how to care for equipment
- Create a garden maintenance calendar for their garden.
- Carry out garden maintenance tasks.
- Understand the functions of parts of plants and trees.
- Identify different trees and plants and the differences between them.
- Select appropriate next steps onto further learning opportunities

This course contains accredited units from Open Awards:
- Recognise Trees and Plants (E3)
- Introduction to Garden Maintenance (E3)
These units are blended into the core content of the course and learners will create evidence for the unit's criteria by completing tasks and practical activities as planned by the course teacher. Certification for this unit will be provided upon successful completion of the course.
Online learning will be completed through Zoom and learners will complete the course by independently working through a variety of assessment tasks, including:

- Tutorials
- Quizzes
- Reflecting on their own learning and experience
- Participating in discussion forums
- Completing practical tasks
In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 3 and above. Learners will also need a basic level of IT skills to be able to access the course and follow online instructions. If training or support is needed, please enquire about our free ICT courses.
This short course is accredited, and you will need to complete a short workbook or Microsoft Form during or between sessions to accompany the practical activities.
Learners will need:
- Access to a garden, green space, allotment or outdoor area where possible.
- Access to a small range of gardening tools, and personal protective equipment although this is not necessary as some of this can be provided.
Following the completion of this course there are a number of progression opportunities available, including both short and long courses. Each week the tutor will cover a different subject within the remit of Horticulture. This may vary due to seasonality but will always include plant propagation, weed identification and control methods, use and care of tools used in horticulture. These varying subjects will help to determine your next steps and your tutor can provide more information on the right next step for you.
Following the completion of this course the following progression options are available:
E3 Practical Gardening Skills: Each week the tutor will cover a different subject within the remit of Horticulture. This may vary due to seasonality but will always include plant propagation, weed identification and control methods, use and care of tools used in horticulture.
For longer accredited courses in Practical Horticulture or Conservation please talk to your teacher.

In some circumstances, this funding allows us to offer courses at a reduced cost to learners who meet certain eligibility criteria. Below are the standard course fees for Lancashire residents and, where applicable, the reduced fees available to eligible learners.

To qualify for reduced fees, you may be required to complete a fee assessment and provide evidence to support your eligibility.

Text Value

The standard fee for anyone living outside of the LCCA funded area (e.g. if your home address is in the Greater Manchester devolved funded area) is charged at £12.10 per hour, but may be higher for some courses.
