The Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship prepares you for a rewarding career in one of the most in-demand construction trades. This occupation is found in both the new build and refurbishment sectors, central to creating the homes, schools, hospitals, and infrastructure society relies upon. With the increasing demand for new housing and skilled tradespeople, carpenters and joiners are essential to the future of the construction industry.

As an apprentice, you will gain hands-on experience while specialising in either Site Carpentry, working on construction sites to install building components, or Architectural Joinery, where you will work in a workshop environment producing complex building parts. You will develop technical skills, precision, and problem-solving abilities, supported by expert guidance.

At the College, apprentices benefit from industry-standard workshops and training from expert Trainer Assessors who are highly regarded within their field, ensuring your learning reflects current industry practices and expectations.
Installing building components, including door and window frames, hatch linings, floor joists and coverings, straight partitions, and staircases.

Fitting interior elements, such as doors, mouldings, ironmongery, service encasements, wall and floor units, cladding, and staircase components.

Roof construction, erecting inclined roofs with gables, joists, coverings, and roof components.

Architectural Joinery, producing setting out details for doors, windows, stairs, units, and opening lights.

Marking out timber from setting out details to manufacture doors, windows, units, fitments, and staircases.

Creating, fitting, and assembling components to produce high-quality joinery products.

Operating fixed workshop machinery to safely create precision joinery components.
The apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of on-the-job learning with your employer and off-the-job training at college. In the workplace, you will gain hands-on experience working alongside skilled tradespeople on live projects, either on construction sites or within workshops. At college, you will take part in structured sessions focused on developing your practical skills, technical knowledge, and understanding of industry standards.

Training is delivered in specialist workshops equipped with industry-standard tools and materials. Regular reviews, mentoring, and workplace visits from experienced Trainer Assessors ensure you are supported to develop the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required for success.
A Level 2 qualification is equivalent to GCSE Grades 4-9 and you will be expected to have achieved at least four GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, including Maths and/or English, to enrol on this programme. Successful completion of this course will pave the way for you to further your studies at Level 3.

Regular reviews with your employer and Trainer Assessor to track progress

End Point Assessment (EPA) – conducted by an independent assessor and including a practical skills test and professional discussion
Expert Trainer Assessors with vast industry experience provide continuous guidance and support throughout your programme.

Strong employer links with opportunities at companies such as B&E Boys, Edisford Joinery & Construction, Onward Homes, and H&S Joinery.

Employers have co-created the programme, ensuring it is highly relevant to current industry standards and practices.

Completing the Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship opens up a range of opportunities across the construction industry. Typical job roles include Site Carpenter, Bench Joiner, or Workshop Joiner, with employment available in both residential and commercial projects.

With experience, you can progress into specialist roles such as Heritage Restorer or Shopfitter, or take on supervisory responsibilities as a Site Supervisor or Team Leader. Many apprentices also continue their training with a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery, supporting progression into higher-level roles or further qualifications in construction and site management.
