Please note that the College is only able to offer this course at the rates publicised on this website to those individuals aged 19+ or over on 31st August 2024 whose home address is in areas of England outside of the devolved authority areas of: Cambridge and Peterborough, Greater Manchester, Greater London, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, West Midlands and West of England. Where an individual resides outside of England or in one of the devolved areas then the College reserves the right to charge you for the delivery of the course at a rate of £11.25 per hour. The awarding body for this qualification is Cache and it will be accredited through Lancashire Adult Learning.

This qualification is designed for a wide range of learners who wish to understand the approaches to care and support of those with mental health problems.

This qualification aims to raise awareness of:

· The role of the mental health worker
· The process and approaches involved in the care and support of those who experience mental ill-health.

The objective of this qualification is to give learners working, or intending to work in a health or social care context, an understanding of approaches to supporting those with mental health needs. It will also enable learners to progress to other qualifications in health care and social care.

The course content is designed to take around 12 weeks (3 hours per week, classroom time) plus additional independent study time to complete. Learners will receive support to complete the course where necessary.

· Know the legislation and guidance that applies to those with mental health problems.
· Understand what is meant by ‘duty of care’.
· Know about dilemmas and conflicts relating to duty of care.
· Know how to recognise and report unsafe practices.
· Understand the impact of own actions on individuals and others.
· Understand the importance of consent in health and social care practice.
· Understand the key features of the care planning process.
· Understand aspects of good practice in the care planning process.
· Understand how mental health change occurs.
· Understand the role of others in the individual’s mental health change,
· Know the treatment options available to manage mental health problems.
· Know how to access information to support understanding of mental health issues

Entry Requirements

In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Level 1 and above. Learners will also need a basic level of IT skills to be able to access course content and follow online instructions.

Learners will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet device with access to the internet. 

All devices should have a camera, sound and a microphone so they are able to interact with their teacher at key points during the course.

The course can be accessed in two ways; via Moodle (VLE – Virtual Learning Environment) and/or other on-line learning platforms with learners working independently, at their own pace to complete, or attending face to face lessons at the college. However, all assessments will need to be completed online via Moodle.

Learners will be given access to a comprehensive online learning platform which will provide them with detailed knowledge and information to support their successful completion of each unit. Further self-directed research is encouraged to expand learner’s understanding of key topics.

Regular submission of work that will be assessed and reviewed weekly.

Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge

Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows them to identify how much they have learnt and where they might need to do further study or research.

Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations.

Workbook will be supplied at the start of the course which will be used by the learner to record their knowledge through activities and open questions, which will be submitted at regular points throughout the course.

The online application and enrolment process is really simple, once you have clicked the “APPLY" or "ENROL” button you will be redirected to the portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t done so previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.
Once your applications has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.
At any point you can log back into the portal throughout the year, update information like your predicted GCSE grades, update contact and consent information and keep a live track of your application.
