Did you know that 1 in 4 people in the UK are likely to experience mental health problems each year? Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet whilst we know how to take care of our own physical health, many people do not know how to support friends, relatives, learners or even colleagues who are experiencing poor mental health.

This short introductory session is designed to raise an awareness of the signs and symptoms associated with emergency mental health incidents, specifically with adult learners.

By having some awareness of the range of common mental health conditions, as well as how to initially respond to a person experiencing mental ill-health, you can identify those who may need support and how to refer them to our College-wide Mental Health First aiders.

Roles and responsibilities in relation to mental health first aid

Initial response to a mental health emergency

In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Level 1 and above.

Ideally, all learners will need to enrol online prior to any course starting through the online enrolment portal.

Learners attend a classroom or online session. The sessions will be delivered in an appropriate setting and learners will be supported to work through the course content. In addition to this, learners will be given information about Apps and websites to access additional resources.

During the session they will be learning in a variety of ways:

Exchanging ideas with other learners

Sharing what has been learnt on the course.

Engaging in group activities.

Actively listening, observing and discussing.

Accessing Apps and websites for resources and further learning opportunities.

The teacher will use a range of activities to review learner’s knowledge throughout the course and identify any gaps and additional information required

Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge

Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows them to identify how much they have learnt and where they might need to do further study or research. .

It would be useful to have a pen and paper so you can make notes throughout the course.

The online application and enrolment process is really simple, once you have clicked the “APPLY" or "ENROL” button you will be redirected to the portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t done so previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.
Once your applications has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.
At any point you can log back into the portal throughout the year, update information like your predicted GCSE grades, update contact and consent information and keep a live track of your application.
