Want to improve your English and enjoy college life? The ESOL course is perfect for you if you want to build skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. You’ll learn through classroom activities, projects, and even tasters in different vocational areas, while also studying Maths, ICT, and communication. No qualifications are needed—your starting level is chosen by an initial assessment. As you progress, you’ll get the chance to follow a vocational or academic route, depending on your goals.

ESOL is the first step to confidence, independence, and your future at college.
The main purpose of this ESOL course is to give you the chance to develop all four skills in English: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. If you’re 15 or 16 and want to feel more confident using English in the classroom, with friends, and in everyday life, this course is the perfect starting point.

You’ll take part in exciting, practical lessons designed to help you build your grammar and vocabulary step by step. Learning happens through classroom activities, enterprise projects, and access to a wide range of vocational areas in college, so you’ll be practising your English while exploring different opportunities for the future.

No qualifications are needed to join this course. Your starting level will be decided through an initial assessment, so you’re placed at the right stage for your ability. As you progress, you’ll also study topics that will prepare you for further study and independence, including Maths, ICT, communication and teamwork, vocational tasters, and more.

When you reach Entry Level 3 ESOL, you’ll have the chance to choose either a vocational or an academic route, depending on your career ambitions. That means ESOL doesn’t just improve your English—it opens the door to the next stage of your college journey.

If you’re ready to improve your English, grow in confidence, and move onto the course that’s right for you, ESOL is your pathway forward.
The ESOL course is delivered through classroom lessons, interactive activities, and practical communication tasks. In college, you’ll focus on developing skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with lessons designed to build confidence in everyday English. Learning is engaging and supportive, using group discussions, role play, and real-life scenarios to practise language in context. The course is flexible and tailored to individual needs, helping you progress towards further study, training, or employment while improving your English skills for daily life.
There are no formal entry criteria for this course but you will need to display a clear aspiration to progress into the world of work. Prior to starting this course you will need to complete an initial assessment.
Assessment for ESOL is continuous and based on a range of practical tasks rather than traditional exams. You’ll complete speaking and listening activities, reading exercises, and writing tasks to demonstrate your progress. Tutors assess your development through observation, feedback, and set assignments, ensuring your skills improve steadily. Formal assessments may be included at different levels to recognise your achievements. This supportive approach allows you to build confidence in using English, preparing you for progression into further study, vocational training, or employment.
Studying ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) gives you the language skills and confidence to unlock new opportunities in education, work, and everyday life. This course is not just about learning English—it is about building communication skills that allow you to progress in your chosen path. Once you have developed your English skills, you will be ready to move into sectors such as customer service, retail, hospitality, construction, or care, where good communication is key and opportunities are wide-ranging.

ESOL is also an excellent springboard to further study, including vocational courses at Levels 1, 2, and 3, and eventually university. With strong English skills, you could progress to professional careers such as Nurse, Teacher, Business Manager, Social Worker, or IT Specialist. Some learners go on to apprenticeships or skilled employment, applying their English in practical and professional contexts.

Learning English opens doors. Whether your ambition is to continue into further education, train for a specific career, or build a future in the UK, ESOL equips you with the essential skills for success. It is the first step towards achieving your goals, gaining independence, and making a difference in your life and the lives of others.
