Course Information
Love science and prefer learning by doing? Level 2 Applied Science is packed with experiments, investigations, and real-world science. You’ll explore biology, chemistry, and physics while developing practical lab skills that link directly to careers in healthcare, engineering, and the environment. With coursework, projects, and practical assessments, it’s perfect if you prefer hands-on learning. By the end, you’ll be ready to progress to Level 3 Applied Science or another science-related pathway.

Turn your curiosity into practical skills and take your next step in science.
Do you enjoy science and prefer learning through experiments and practical work rather than theory? Level 2 Applied Science is a fantastic way to explore science in action while building the skills you need for progression to university or employment.

This exciting programme gives you a broad introduction to biology, chemistry, and physics, with a strong focus on how science is used in the real world. You’ll explore topics such as health and the human body, chemical applications, energy and waves, and practical laboratory techniques. The emphasis is on applied learning, meaning you’ll spend lots of time working in labs, carrying out investigations, and learning how science impacts industries like healthcare, engineering, and the environment.

Alongside your science modules, you’ll continue to develop your English, Maths, and employability skills—all vital for further study and future careers. You’ll also have opportunities for trips, guest speakers, and projects that link science to the workplace, giving you a real insight into how your learning connects to the world around you.

Assessment is varied, including practical experiments, coursework, presentations, and some written tasks, making it ideal for learners who prefer ongoing assessments to one final exam.

By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to progress to Level 3 Applied Science or another science-related course, with pathways into areas such as healthcare, lab work, or environmental science.

If you’re curious, hands-on, and love finding out how things work, this course is your next step.
Level 2 Applied Science is delivered through classroom learning, laboratory experiments, and practical projects. In college, you’ll explore Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, developing theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Learning is interactive, with lessons supported by lab work, research tasks, and group projects. You’ll also focus on applying science to real-world contexts and understanding safe working practices. This balance of theory and hands-on investigation prepares you for further study or entry-level roles in science-related industries.
4 GCSE passes at a minimum of Grade 3, or a Level 1 BTEC, which must include a Grade 3 in English Language and Maths and 3, 3 in Combined Science.
Assessment for Level 2 Applied Science combines internal assignments with external examinations. Internal assessments include laboratory experiments, written reports, and presentations, allowing you to demonstrate practical application and scientific understanding. You’ll also compile research and evidence through assignments linked to different units. Externally, you will complete formal examinations covering the core principles of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The course is designed to test both your theoretical knowledge and your ability to apply science safely and accurately in practice, preparing you for progression to Level 3 study or vocational training.
Studying Level 2 Applied Science helps you develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This course is not just about experiments in the lab—it is about learning how science is applied in real-world settings, from healthcare to the environment. On completion, you may consider entry-level opportunities in areas such as laboratory support, healthcare assistance, or technical roles in manufacturing and testing, where scientific skills are valued.

For many learners, the next step is to progress to Level 3 Applied Science. From there, you can continue to university, studying degrees in Biomedical Science, Environmental Science, Forensics, or Chemistry. These routes can lead to professional careers such as Biomedical Scientist, Forensic Scientist, Environmental Scientist, Pharmacologist, or Research Scientist.

Science underpins many industries and is at the heart of innovation and discovery. Whether your ambition is to start gaining experience in technical roles or continue studying towards a professional scientific career, Level 2 Applied Science provides the foundation and confidence to move forward.
