With trips, guest speakers, and practical assessments, it’s the perfect blend of academic study and applied science.

Level 3 Applied Science is your pathway to exciting opportunities in science and beyond.
Are you fascinated by the world of science and want to take your learning to the next level? Level 3 Applied Science is the perfect step if you’re aiming for university, and apprenticeship, or a career in the science or healthcare industries.

This course builds on the foundations of biology, chemistry, and physics but focuses on applied, hands-on learning rather than just theory. You’ll explore areas such as human physiology, genetics, biomedical science, forensic science, microbiology, and environmental science. Through practical lab work, experiments, and real-world projects, you’ll see how scientific knowledge is used in fields like medicine, research, and industry.

Assessment is varied and practical, including coursework, experiments, projects, and presentations, alongside some externally assessed units. This means you’ll have lots of opportunities to show your skills in different ways, rather than just one big exam.

Beyond the classroom, you’ll gain insight into science careers through trips, guest speakers, and potentially work placements, helping you make links between your studies and your future. You’ll also continue to develop essential transferable skills in research, analysis, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication.

By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to progress onto university courses in science-related fields, apprenticeships, or skilled employment in laboratories, healthcare, or environmental work.

If you’re passionate about science and want to combine practical skills with academic learning, this course will launch you into an exciting future.
Level 3 Applied Science is delivered through classroom lessons, laboratory experiments, and project-based learning. In college, you’ll study Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in depth, with a strong focus on scientific methods, analysis, and application. Learning is hands-on, with practical investigations, research activities, and collaborative projects that mirror real industry practice. You’ll also develop key skills such as problem-solving, communication, and working safely in a lab. This mix of theory and applied science prepares you for university or employment in science-related fields.
5 GCSE passes at a minimum of Grade 4, which must include a Grade 4, 4 in Combined Science and a Grade 3 and 4 in English Language and Maths, in either combination.
Assessment for Level 3 Applied Science combines internal coursework with externally assessed exams or controlled tasks. Internal assessments include practical investigations, written reports, research projects, presentations, and portfolio-based work, allowing you to demonstrate applied knowledge and skills. External assessments, set by the awarding body, may include written exams on scientific principles or controlled tasks testing practical methods and analysis. Overall grades are awarded across all units, with external assessments contributing significantly. This structure ensures you gain both theoretical understanding and practical competence, preparing you for university or scientific careers.
Studying Level 3 Applied Science opens the door to a wide range of exciting and impactful opportunities. This course is not just about theory—it develops the practical and analytical skills needed to thrive in modern science and technology. On completion, you will be ready to take your next steps into sectors such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, or laboratory services, where skilled scientists and technicians are always in demand.

The qualification is also an excellent springboard to university, leading to degrees in Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or Forensic Science. These can lead to prestigious careers as Biomedical Scientist, Laboratory Technician, Environmental Scientist, Forensic Scientist, or Pharmacologist. Some students progress into related fields such as Biochemistry, Genetics, or Sports Science, building expertise that can influence innovation and research.

Science is at the heart of solving global challenges and improving lives. Whether your ambition is to research cures for diseases, protect the environment, or develop cutting-edge technology, Level 3 Applied Science provides the foundation to succeed. The knowledge and skills you gain will position you for a meaningful career where your curiosity and problem-solving ability can make a real impact.
