This course blends theory and practice to help you understand how the body and mind work in sporting performance. You’ll study areas like anatomy and physiology, sports psychology, biomechanics, nutrition, fitness testing, and training for performance. From analysing elite athletes to creating tailored fitness programmes, you’ll explore how science drives success in sport and exercise.

Practical work is at the heart of the course. You’ll use gym facilities, testing equipment, and performance analysis tools to bring the theory to life. You’ll also develop core skills in leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and communication—qualities that will set you apart in higher education or employment.

Level 3 Sports and Exercise Science is delivered through classroom study, laboratory work, and practical activities. In college, you’ll explore topics such as anatomy and physiology, sports nutrition, biomechanics, psychology, and fitness testing. Learning is interactive, with lessons supported by applied research, practical demonstrations, and specialist equipment. You’ll also develop skills in coaching, performance analysis, and injury assessment. This balance of theory and practice prepares you for university or employment in the health, fitness, and sport industries.
5 GCSE passes at a minimum of Grade 4, which must include a Grade 4 in both English Language and Maths.
Assessment for Level 3 Sports and Exercise Science combines coursework, external examinations, and practical assessments. Coursework includes assignments, research projects, and written reports on topics such as anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and psychology. External exams, set and marked by awarding bodies, test knowledge of key scientific principles. Practical elements may involve conducting fitness tests, analysing performance, or demonstrating coaching and injury assessment skills. This variety of assessments ensures you develop both theoretical knowledge and applied expertise, preparing you for university study or careers in sport, health, and exercise science.
The college is proud to work in partnership with Burnley FC in the Community to offer a range of sports performance programmes in Football, Netball and Cricket.

The Burnley FC Shadow Youth Team offers a unique education and performance programme for those wishing to maximise their football talent. You will represent the College, in partnership with Burnley FC in the Community, in a range of National Leagues operated by the English Football League and the Association of Colleges. Students will benefit from a high-quality coaching from UEFA and FA licensed coaching staff and playing experience, while studying towards a sports related qualification that can lead to work, higher education or further study.

For those interested in Cricket you will benefit from weekly coaching sessions run by qualified coaches from BFC in the Community. We work in partnership with Lancashire cricket to provide you with o[opportunities to visit Old Trafford for match experiences, be coached by representatives of Lancashire County Cricket and complete a Cricket Activators coaching course. As well as this you will play competitive fixture though involvement in the AOC cricket league.

For those interested in Netball you will benefit from a weekly training schedule to improve your fitness and skills for netball delivered by qualified coaches from BFC in the community. You will play in regular fixtures though the AOC North West league and have the opportunity to complete umpiring and coaching courses whilst on programme to further boost your career in sport.
Studying Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science opens up a dynamic future in the world of sport, health, and human performance. This course is not just about fitness—it gives you the scientific understanding and practical skills needed to help people reach their full potential. On completion, you will be ready to take your next steps into sectors such as sports science, fitness and wellbeing, health promotion, or rehabilitation, where expertise in the body and performance is highly valued.

The qualification is also an excellent springboard to university, leading to degrees in Sport and Exercise Science, Physiotherapy, Sports Coaching, Strength and Conditioning, or Nutrition. These can lead to exciting careers such as Sports Scientist, Physiotherapist, Performance Analyst, Strength and Conditioning Coach, or Exercise Physiologist. Some students go on to study related subjects such as Psychology, Public Health, or Education, opening up further opportunities in research, teaching, or community health.
