The HNC in Sustainable Business Management is designed for those who want to develop a strong foundation in business while focusing on the challenges and opportunities of sustainability in today’s global economy. The qualification provides the knowledge, skills, and confidence to begin or advance a career in business, management, or sustainability-related roles. You will explore essential areas of business, including marketing, finance, operations, and leadership, alongside specialist study of sustainability, corporate responsibility, and environmental management. Emphasis is placed on linking theory to practice, ensuring you can apply learning to real-world business contexts. Taught in small, supportive classes, the course is designed to build critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Whether your ambition is to progress into employment, contribute to sustainable business practice, or continue to further study at HND or degree level, this course provides a flexible and future-focused pathway.

Optional specialist modules – such as entrepreneurship, supply chain management, or digital business.
Teaching is interactive and practical, combining lectures, seminars, workshops, and group projects with independent study. Real-world business case studies, problem-solving activities, and employer-led projects are central to delivery, helping you to apply theory to practice.Small group teaching ensures you receive personalised support from tutors with industry and academic expertise. You will also be encouraged to reflect on your own professional experiences, developing transferable skills in leadership, communication, and digital business practices.
Candidates are selected based on their ability to cope with and benefit from the programme. Their suitability can be demonstrated either through previous educational achievement or through experience and aptitude.Admission by prior qualification will normally require a minimum 32 UCAS Tariff points with the majority of the points gained in engineering, mathematics or science subjects.

Typically, points can be derived from:
One GCE A level or Vocational A level pass or equivalent
Two AS level passes
BTEC National Diploma/Certificate
Other qualifications such as Scottish Highers, Welsh Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificates, International Baccalaureate, with the required UCAS points
A pass in a recognised Access course
Equivalent Scottish or Irish qualifications
GCSE Maths and English grade C or above, or equivalent are required to support future career progression.

Admission by experience and aptitude will be based on the length and type of the candidate’s employment experience and their ability to demonstrate an aptitude and enthusiasm for the subject. As part of this process, candidates may be required to undertake aptitude tests and/or to provide personal and/or employment references.

Presentations and group projects – building teamwork, leadership, and communication.
Research and project work – managing a sustainable business project.
Portfolios and reflective tasks – evidencing skills and professional development.
Upon successful completion of the programme, one certificate will be issued by LJMU.

Career opportunities include roles such as Business Administrator, Sustainability Officer, Project Coordinator, Junior Manager, or Marketing and Operations Assistant.Many graduates choose to continue their studies by progressing to an HND or BA (Hons) degree in Business, Management, or Sustainability. Longer term, this qualification can support career progression into roles such as Sustainability Consultant, Operations Manager, or Corporate Social Responsibility Specialist, reflecting the growing importance of sustainable practice in every sector.
