Course Information
The HNC Computer Studies is designed for students who want to develop specialist knowledge and technical skills in computing while building a foundation for further study or employment in this fast-moving sector. The programme equips you with a broad understanding of computing principles alongside hands-on experience with current technologies and software.

You will study key areas such as programming, networking, databases, cybersecurity, web design, and cloud computing, while also developing problem-solving, project management, and professional communication skills. With employers increasingly demanding adaptable and digitally skilled professionals, this course provides both academic knowledge and applied expertise.

Developed with input from employers, the HNC offers a recognised qualification that prepares you for technical roles or progression to the HND Computing and related degree-level study.
You will study five core modules:
• Computing project
• Database design and implementation
• Networking security
• Programming and software development
• The computing professional

Then you will select an additional one module from the following options:
• Computer systems architecture
• Website and e-commerce development
• Data analytics
Teaching combines lectures, seminars, workshops, and practical sessions, supported by independent learning. Core computing concepts are introduced in lectures, while workshops and labs provide hands-on experience with software, coding environments, and digital tools.

You will work on real-world briefs, collaborative projects, and independent assignments that mirror professional computing practice. Tutorials and feedback sessions provide personalised support, while project-based work develops your critical and technical expertise.
Candidates are selected on the basis of their ability to cope with and benefit from the programme. Their suitability can be demonstrated either through previous educational achievement or experience and aptitude.

Admission by prior qualification will normally require a minimum 32 UCAS Tariff points with the majority of the points gained in related subjects. Typically, points can be derived from:
One GCE A level or Vocational A level pass or equivalent
Two AS level passes
BTEC National Diploma/Certificate
Other qualifications such as Scottish Highers, Welsh Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificates,
International Baccalaureate, with the required UCAS points
A pass in a recognised Access course
Equivalent Scottish or Irish qualifications

Admission by experience and aptitude will be based on the length and type of the candidate’s employment experience and their ability to demonstrate an aptitude and enthusiasm for the subject. As part of this process, candidates may be required to undertake aptitude tests and/or provide personal and/or employment references.

Maths and English Grade C and above should be held, or Functional Skills Level 2 as an alternative, as well as basic IT skills.
Programming projects – designing and implementing software solutions.

Reports and essays – critically analysing computing concepts and industry practice.

Practical assessments – demonstrating skills in networking, databases, and web development.

Presentations and discussions – building confidence in professional communication.

Portfolio development – evidencing technical work for employment or progression.

Professional project – delivering an in-depth investigation into a computing theme.

Graduates of the HNC Computer Studies are well-prepared for technical roles across the digital and IT industries. Career opportunities include Software Developer, IT Support Technician, Web Designer, Database Administrator, Cybersecurity Analyst, or Network Technician, with employment available in a wide range of sectors.

The HNC also provides a clear progression route to the HND Computing or degree-level study in areas such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Cybersecurity, supporting long-term goals such as specialist roles or management positions.
