Course Information
The HNC Mechanical Engineering is designed for students and professionals seeking to build advanced knowledge and practical skills in mechanical systems and processes. This qualification provides a strong grounding in engineering principles while focusing on the design, development, and application of mechanical technologies used across modern industry.

You will study areas such as mechanical principles, thermodynamics, computer-aided design (CAD), and manufacturing processes, alongside core skills in mathematics, science, and project management. With an emphasis on problem-solving, innovation, and sustainability, the programme equips you with the technical and analytical expertise valued by employers in sectors such as manufacturing, energy, transport, and aerospace.

Delivered in collaboration with industry partners and aligned to sector needs, the HNC also provides progression to the HND Mechanical Engineering.
Modules :
Design & Project – applying knowledge gained from other modules into real world project situations
Engineering Mathmatics – applying mathematical methods to solve technical problems.
Engineering Science – understanding the principles underpinning engineering.
Mechanical Principles – analysing forces, dynamics, and mechanical systems.
Thermodynamics, Heat Pumps and Engines - This module introduces the principles of thermodynamics and their engineering applications, including thermodynamic systems, the steady flow energy equation, heat transfer, and internal combustion engine performance.
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) – using industry-standard software to design components and assemblies.
Teaching combines lectures, seminars, workshops, and laboratory sessions with guided independent study. Lectures introduce core engineering and manufacturing concepts, while workshops and lab sessions allow you to apply knowledge using specialist equipment and software.You will engage in project-based assignments and group work to build teamwork and problem-solving skills. Tutorials and feedback sessions provide personalised support, while independent research develops your analytical and professional competence.
Candidates are selected on the basis of their ability to cope with and benefit from the programme. Their suitability can be demonstrated either through previous educational achievement or through experience and aptitude.

Admission by prior qualification will normally require a minimum 48 UCAS Tariff points with the majority of the points gained in engineering, mathematics or science subjects. Typically, points can be derived from:

o One or more GCE A level(s) or Vocational A level pass or equivalent
o Two AS level passes
o BTEC National Diploma/Certificate
o Other qualifications such as Scottish Highers, Welsh Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificates, International Baccalaureate, with the required UCAS points
o A pass in a recognised Access course
o Equivalent Scottish or Irish qualifications

Candidates should normally have a qualification at level 3 that has appropriate mathematical content. Admission by experience and aptitude will be based on the length and type of the candidate’s employment experience and his/her ability to demonstrate an aptitude and enthusiasm for the subject. As part of this process, candidates may be required to undertake aptitude tests and/or to provide personal and/or employment references.

Graduates of the HNC Mechanical Engineering are equipped for technical and supervisory roles across a wide range of industries. Career opportunities include Mechanical Design Engineer, Production Engineer, Maintenance Supervisor, Process Engineer, or CAD Technician, with employment in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, energy, and transport.

The qualification also provides progression to the HND Mechanical Engineering or related degree-level study, supporting longer-term goals such as professional registration and advancement into senior roles.
As an HNC Mechanical Engineering student, you will study within our dedicated University Centre and specialist engineering facilities. These include fully equipped engineering laboratories, CAD suites, and workshops, designed to replicate professional environments and provide hands-on technical training.
