The FdA Education (Early Years) is designed for those passionate about shaping the lives of children in the 0–8 age range, combining academic study with practical learning to prepare you for impactful roles in education and care. This programme develops the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to support children’s development while promoting inclusive and effective practice.

You will explore key themes including child development, safeguarding, curriculum design, educational theory, and working with families, all underpinned by current policy and sector priorities. The programme also places strong emphasis on reflective practice, encouraging you to analyse your professional approach and adapt to meet the diverse needs of children and communities.

Whether you are beginning your career in early years education or building on existing experience, this course provides the confidence, critical insight, and applied skills to progress into meaningful roles or further study.

This is a full time course, delivered face to face.

Teaching is engaging and applied, combining lectures, seminars, workshops, and group projects with independent study. Case studies, research activities, and collaborative tasks connect theory to real-world practice, helping you build confidence in applying your learning.

Work-related learning is at the heart of delivery, with opportunities to link academic study to your own professional or voluntary role in early years settings. Tutorials and small class sizes provide tailored guidance, ensuring you can reflect on your practice and develop both academic and professional skills.
Candidates are expected to have successfully completed a relevant qualification at Level 3, such as a BTEC, Diploma or T-Level. Whilst the relevant qualification should map to the chosen pathway, alternative qualifications at the appropriate level will be considered on an individual basis through non-standard entry this may include substantial work experience.

Candidates are normally expected to have achieved at least a grade 4 (or equivalent) in GCSE English and Maths.

Graduates of the FdA Education (Early Years) are prepared for roles such as Early Years Practitioner, Nursery Manager, Children’s Centre Worker, Learning Support Assistant, or Family Support Worker.

The programme also provides a clear route to further study, with many graduates progressing to the BA (Hons) Education (Top-Up) or related Honours degrees. This creates pathways into teaching (via PGCE) or senior roles such as Early Years Teacher, Education Officer, or Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo).
As a student on the FdA Education (Early Years), you will study in our dedicated University Centre, offering modern teaching rooms, IT suites, and collaborative learning areas.
