Overview of Course

This course will help you to enhance and develop your growing space however small it might be. You may have a balcony, a windowsill or a yard, but with some clever design they can be beautiful and productive. Our expert teachers will help guide you through the practical and theoretical aspects of this course and no experience is expected to take part. An interest to learn more about gardening and put this into practice in your own growing space will be an advantage

This course will allow you to learn the basics for looking after a small garden and help you to

design and make the best use of the space that you have – however small that may be

During the course learners will:

1. Design ideas for maximising growing space in a small area

2. Propagate new plants for a small space

3. Make a display in a container suitable to the season

This course contains three accredited units from Open Awards:

1. Introduction to the propagation of plants (Entry level 2)

2. Cultivating plant cuttings (Entry level 3)

3. Making a product (Entry level 3)

These units are blended into the core content of the course and learners will create evidence for

the unit's criteria by completing tasks and practical activities as planned by the course teacher.

Certification will be provided upon successful completion of the course.

Entry Requirements

In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in

English at Entry Level 3 and above.  


A personal interest in Horticulture is essential for successful completion of this course but no practical experience is necessary.


This course can be attended in suitable community settings or online via Microsoft teams or Zoom. If accessing online, learners will need a basic level of IT skills to be able to access the course and follow online instructions. Courses delivered on college approved community sites will need a minimum of 8 learners in order to be viable. Links to the college enrolment portal will be provided prior to course start dates.

Learning during the course is blended between practical and theory to enable you to build your

knowledge of Horticulture whilst developing your practical skills in the subject. 


To consolidate and evidence learning throughout the course you will participate in/complete: 

· Practical tasks and assessments  

· Written work recording evidence against unit criterion 

· 1:1 Tutorials 

· Reflection of learning and teacher feedback

Regular verbal and written feedback will illustrate learner progress, highlighting areas of success and development.  Completion of assessment at the start and end of the course will enable learners to review their skills and knowledge against the qualification, highlighting specific areas to focus on or for further develop.  


Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations

Additional information

For online courses learners will need:


· Access to a small range of gardening tools, resources such as compost, seeds, pots and personal protective equipment (more information will be sent directly by the teacherbefore the course start date.)


For all courses, it would be useful to have a pen and paper so you can make notes throughout the course. 

The college has an Additional Learning Support Team who can support students with a variety of learning needs. If you have a diagnosed additional learning need, or feel you may need additional support in order to successfully complete this course, please speak to your course teacher upon enrolment.

Careers progression

Following the completion of this course the following progression options are available:


· Working with Plants (4 accredited units from Open Awards) 4 weeks in total

· Practical Gardening Skills (4 accredited units from Open Awards) 4 weeks in total


Each of the above courses are aimed at learners who would like to further develop their practical skills and knowledge in Horticulture for application in a home or allotment environment.


Both of the above courses are currently free.


· City and Guilds Level 1 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills (24

weeks)

· £99 fee applies to this qualification; however, you may be entitled to fee remission if you are unemployed, on an eligible means tested benefit, or a low income under £25,000 per year.

The online application and enrolment process is really simple, once you have clicked the “APPLY" or "ENROL” button you will be redirected to the portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t done so previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.
Once your applications has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.
At any point you can log back into the portal throughout the year, update information like your predicted GCSE grades, update contact and consent information and keep a live track of your application.
