Course Information

Course Information
This course is designed for individuals who need a CSCS labouring card to secure employment in the Construction Industry but currently lack the necessary qualifications.

On successful completion of the course you will gain various qualifications and certificates:
- AIM Qualifications Level 1 Certificate in Skills for Working in Construction and Building Industries
- AIM Qualifications Level 1 Award in Health & Safety in a Construction Environment
- CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operative test
Once you have achieved all assessments, we can then apply for your CSCS labouring card.

During the programme an employer joins us to discuss construction opportunities with them.

The course is fully funded for learners who are 19+, unemployed and looking for employment. Funding is also available if you are working but earning less than £25,750 (evidence required).

During the course you will demonstrate and develop your understanding of:
• Working in the Construction Industry
• Principles of Building, Construction and Communication
• General health risks in a construction environment
• Principles of risk assessment
• Health and welfare
• Working at height
• Safe manual handling
• Using equipment safely
• Site transport safety
• Environmental Awareness
The course is delivered over 2 weeks Tuesday - Friday. The course is delivered from our Adult Learning Centre, in Accrington - Waterside Centre, St. James Court West, Accrington, BB5 1NA.

Prior to starting the course, you will attend an induction. During the first part of the induction, you will learn how the programme works, requirements and which CSCS card you would be entitled to. In the second part of the induction, your English and digital skills will be assessed, to ensure your current skills level matches that which is necessary for the course. Once you have attended an induction, we will confirm your place to start the course.

We will start the course with an initial assessment to gauge your current knowledge of the topics we will cover. This will provide both you and us with a clear understanding of your existing familiarity with the course material. During the initial assessment, we will review any relevant qualifications you hold, experience and knowledge to customise the learning experience to better meet your needs.

You will learn by;
- Toolbox Talks: Presentations and group activities focused on key topics related to the Construction Industry
- Independent computer-based learning: Course materials are hosted on our Moodle platform, which you will access during class. These materials consist of interactive modules that include information, quizzes, videos, and feedback. As you engage with the learning materials, you will utilise key information to demonstrate and enhance your knowledge by answering questions related to topics in the Construction Industry. This method enables you to work on your own specific development areas, whilst other learners work on their own development areas.

Most responses are in a multiple-choice format, and you will receive a score along with feedback. This allows you to learn from your selections and make improvements if needed.
At the end of each module, you will be asked a series of questions relating to the topic. You will be given a score and feedback based on those answers. There is also a progress and activity completion bar when logged in to Moodle. This makes it nice and clear which parts you have completed/passed and which you have not.

You will be able to discuss this with your tutor if there are any concerns.
Proficiency in reading and understanding English.
Basic computer skills.
Possession of formal identification, such as a current passport or driving licence. Other options are available and can be discussed over the phone. This is a mandatory requirement for all test centres.
At the end of each module, you will be asked a series of questions relating to the topic. You will be given a score and feedback based on those answers. There is also a progress and activity completion bar when logged in to Moodle. This makes it nice and clear which parts you have completed/passed and which you have not.

You will be able to discuss this with your tutor if there are any concerns.
You will be expected to complete all course materials to help you prepare, on Moodle. There are 3 sections of learning and each section relates to a test which you will need to pass on your way to achieving a CSCS card.

Once you have finished the course, achieved the assessments and gained your CSCS labouring card, you can begin to work within the Construction Industry. If you are interested in a particular trade then you could consider gaining an NVQ Level 2 qualification through an apprenticeship or OSAT. If you have a specific career path in mind, please speak to your course tutor.
