Overview of Course

This short course will introduce learners to simple drawing techniques and activities that will aid relaxation and being present (in the moment.) Learners will explore line, pattern, and tone to create visually pleasing designs whilst benefitting from the relaxing creative process. Learners will also reflect on the positive benefits engaging in creative activities can have on your mental health and wellbeing.

Explore mark making techniques using pen to create their own sample sheet

Create a zentangle tile composition using strings and patterns, inspired by their mark making sample sheet

Experiment with tone by adding pencil shading to their design

Reflect on the benefits creativity can have on their mental health and wellbeing

Entry Requirements

In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 3 and above.  

It is important to note that this course is practical and requires a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of each session.

The ability to read and follow instructions, participate in discussions and understand basic maths is essential to enable full participation in the course.

This programme is designed with beginners in mind and no prior experience is necessary although some learners may have some informal experience within the curriculum area.

In class demonstrations showing different techniques and materials

Engaging in paired activities and completing worksheets to encourage analytical skills, encourage reflective practice and consolidate learning.

Sharing work and reflections during group critiques, so that you can learn from each other.

You will be asked to discuss your individual interests, aspirations and experience within the subject and take part in a range of simple exercises and discussions in order to negotiate individual learning goals.

Learners will be asked to track their progress against course objectives and personal goals, recording feedback and reflection using a Learning Mat.

Assessment of learning will be done using observation of practical tasks and written annotation/evaluation, Q&A, discussion, and reflection. Learners may be asked to as present and share their work and ideas within the group.

Personal reflection on the wider outcomes of the course such as making new friends, increasing your wellbeing through creativity, and connecting with your community.

Development of own analytical skills and ability to critique own work and establish ways of moving forward towards independent learning.

You will be asked to complete a record of your learning to consolidate your new knowledge. This will be done either by paper copy or online using MS Forms. 

We also encourage personal research before and during the course to offer inspiration and context.

Optional extra practice and research will support your progress.

This Course is designed for venue-based community delivery.

What equipment will I need?

The course teacher will come equipped with materials for the session, however if you have your own basic drawing materials that you would like to bring with you, please do but this is not essential for taster sessions.

YOU WILL NEED TO TRANSPORT YOUR WORK FROM THE VENUE – An A3, waterproof display folder may be useful. Consider that sometimes your work may still be wet!

For all courses, it would be useful to have a pen and paper so you can make notes throughout the course.   

The college has an Additional Learning Support Team who can support students with a variety of learning needs. If you have a diagnosed additional learning need or feel you may need additional support in order to successfully complete this course, please speak to your course teacher upon enrolment.

Cant Apply Reason
The online application and enrolment process is really simple, once you have clicked the “APPLY" or "ENROL” button you will be redirected to the portal where you either log in or create an account (if you haven’t done so previously). We will then ask you to give us a couple of bits of information like address, mobile phone number ect and that’s it.
Once your applications has been made the next step will be for you to book yourself onto one of our interview evenings, depending on availability you might be able to do this straight away but otherwise we will get in contact to arrange when you come in for an interview.
At any point you can log back into the portal throughout the year, update information like your predicted GCSE grades, update contact and consent information and keep a live track of your application.
