The Level 2 Auto-care Technician Apprenticeship provides the skills, knowledge, and behaviours needed to launch a career in the fast-paced automotive sector. As an apprentice, you will combine hands-on training with your employer and expert teaching at college, developing both technical ability and essential customer service skills.

Auto-care Technicians work in a variety of settings, from national “Fast-Fit” centres to independent garages. You will learn how to carry out routine servicing, repairs, and safety checks on cars, vans, and light commercial vehicles, using diagnostic tools and specialist equipment.

Alongside the technical aspects, you will develop strong customer-facing skills, including telephone handling, dealing with customer concerns, and supporting effective sales. By the end of the programme, you will be equipped with the confidence and expertise to provide high-quality service, combining mechanical knowledge with professionalism in a customer-focused environment.
• Tyre legislation and technical information including EU Tyre labelling.
• Fundamentals of specific vehicle systems including steering and suspension, braking systems, battery and charging systems, exhaust systems and air-conditioning systems.
• Basic consumer legislation relevant to the occupation including appropriate Health and Safety legislation and requirements for the workplace.
• Hybrid and electric Vehicle system and safe working procedures.
• How the business works and how you contribute to the overall results, demonstrating commercial awareness.
• How to carry out vehicle safety inspections and routine maintenance using manufacturers specifications or approved schedules, using vehicle specific data and meeting legal requirements.
Training is delivered through a combination of on-the-job learning with your employer and structured off-the-job training at Accrington and Rossendale College. Apprentices spend time developing practical skills in our industry-standard Construction and Motor Vehicle Centre, which has been designed to replicate real workplace environments. Facilities include specialist workshops and dedicated spaces for motor vehicle maintenance, alongside access to the latest electric vehicle technologies. This blend of hands-on training and classroom-based learning ensures you develop the technical knowledge, practical ability, and professional behaviours required to succeed, while gaining experience that reflects the demands of today’s industry.
You should be aiming for at least 3 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English Language and/or mathematics.

These requirements may alter dependent upon the needs of the employer. If you don’t quite achieve the entry criteria though don’t worry, we can discuss your options.

If you have not achieved a Grade 4 in English Language and/or mathematics you will be required to achieve a Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills in English and/or Maths as part of your Apprenticeship.
Regular progress reviews with your assessor and employer

Written assignments to demonstrate knowledge and understanding

Practical observations in the workplace to evidence skills in real settings

Completion of a professional portfolio, showcasing your development

A final End Point Assessment, externally validated, to confirm full occupational competence against industry standards

• Employers have worked to co-create the programme making it highly industry relevant.
• On completion of this Apprenticeship Standard you will be eligible to apply for IMI membership as a Registered Young Professional or if you wish as an Associate Member.
• You could also gain entry onto the IMI Professional Register.
Completing the Level 2 Auto-care Technician Apprenticeship opens the door to a range of career opportunities within the motor industry. Many apprentices progress into employment as Auto-care Technicians or Fast-Fit Technicians, working in national chains or independent garages. With further experience, you may move into roles such as Service Technician, Tyre Fitter, or MOT Tester.

Progression to a Level 3 qualification in Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance can lead to more advanced positions, including Diagnostic Technician, Workshop Supervisor, or Service Manager. Ambitious learners may also progress into higher-level study, opening pathways to roles such as Automotive Engineer or Master Technician.
As an Auto-care Technician Apprentice, you will train in our industry-standard Motor Vehicle Centre at Accrington and Rossendale College. The workshops replicate real-world garage environments and are fully equipped with the latest tools and diagnostic equipment used across the automotive industry.

You will also benefit from access to dedicated electric vehicle maintenance technologies, ensuring your skills remain current in a rapidly evolving sector. Alongside practical workshop spaces, classrooms and IT facilities provide the environment to strengthen your technical knowledge. These facilities, combined with employer-based training, ensure you are prepared for the demands of today’s motor vehicle industry.
