Course Information
There's nothing like cooking a meal with food that you have grown at home yourself. Whether you have a garden, yard or even just a windowsill, you can grow herbs and salads that can elevate your cooking and save you money. As well as boosting your wellbeing, this can become a hobby where you are also providing a habitat for our precious wildlife.
This short course will give you the opportunity to learn skills and techniques to start growing your own herbs at home

The course is accredited and a short workbook will be expected to be completed during or after the session to accompany the practical activities.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

1. Grow a range of herbs from seeds, bulbs and/or cuttings

2. Identify plants from the onion, mint and thyme or sage families

3. State the medicinal and culinary uses of these herbs.

4. Identify the characteristics and needs of different herbs.

This course contains one accredited unit from Open Awards:

1. Cultivating Herbs Level 1

These units are blended into the core content of the course and learners will create evidence for the unit criteria by completing tasks and practical activities as planned by the course teacher.

Certification for these units will be provided upon successful completion of the course.
The course will be delivered at a venue and learners will be supported to work through the course content. There will be written work as well as practical so please ensure you bring anything the will facilitate this.
Learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 3 and above.
· Completion of initial assessment task at the start of the course will enable learners to review their knowledge of the course content. At the end of the course learners will review their knowledge again to assess progress.

· Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations.

· Learners will receive feedback
You will be asked to complete:

• A worksheet to record your learning, progress and achievement

In order for the course to start on time, it’s important to be ready to join your course 5 – 10 minutes prior to the official start time.
Learners will need:
· Plant pots, trays or other containers for seed sowing.
· Compost
· Gardening gloves
· You will be provided with a selection of seeds, bulbs or plant material to grow your herbs.
The Additional Learning Support Team work across college supporting students with a variety of learning needs in different ways. Support can be requested at enrolment or at any point throughout your course.
It would be useful to have a pen and paper so you can make notes throughout the course.
