Course Information
In this one-off session you will be introduced to deaf awareness and British Sign Language (BSL) You will identify the barriers the deaf community face on a daily basis communicating in a hearing world. This session will cover tips on how to communicate more effectively with all deaf people. It will also teach you how to introduce yourself using British Sign Language and show you how you can continue to learn BSL independently after the session.

Sessions are delivered online and is a one-off 90 min sessions with further opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge further.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Identify groups of deaf people and how you might communicate differently

Aware of the dos and don’ts in communicating with deaf people

Introduce yourself, fingerspell your name and use basic phrases

Identify how you can further develop your skills independently

You will be expected to attend the session via MS Teams and participate in any discussions, activities and group tasks.
Learners will be completing activities to demonstrate progress towards the aims of the session.

The session will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams and internet access/appropriate IT kit (laptop, PC, tablet, Smartphone)

During the session they will be learning in a variety of ways:

Meeting other learners and sharing knowledge and skills

Sharing what has been learnt on the course

Range of questioning techniques

Actively listening, observing and discussing

Through active participation through group discussion and response to questioning.
There are no entry requirements for this course, however a level of spoken English is required to understand the content. Access to IT equipment with internet access.
The teacher will use a range of activities to review learner’s knowledge throughout the session

Learners will receive verbal feedback in order to further develop their knowledge

Learners will self-assess their own knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the aims of the session. This allows them to identify how much they have learnt and where they might need to do further study.
