Course Information

Course Information
This qualification will introduce learners to using counselling skills and personal development. Perfect for anyone who would like to develop their use of counselling skills for use in either work or a personal capacity.

This qualification does not qualify learners to practise as a counsellor.
You will be introduced to the three main approaches in counselling and learn how these are applied in a therapeutic setting. You will discuss diversity and core ethical issues in a counselling relationship. A significant part of the course is practicing counselling skills and personal development. These skills and knowledge are useful for personal and work life.
You will be taught by highly experienced tutors, who will model their counselling skills and show you practical examples. Throughout the course you will take part in a range of activities, for example, presentations, group work, independent learning etc.
Applicants are required to have successfully completed the Level 1 Introduction to Counselling Skills, or to demonstrate an equivalent qualification or relevant prior experience, in order to undertake counselling skills study at this level. Possession of Level 2 Functional Skills or GCSE English is considered advantageous; however, it is not an essential requirement.
You will have frequent assignment submissions and receive written feedback from your tutor. In addition, your tutor will give you verbal feedback on practical skills and have 1:1 tutorials about your progress and discussions on progression. You are asked to keep a record of all feedback and discussions and reflect on this in one of the assignments.
Your coursework is predominantly portfolio based. However, you will write an essay on the approaches in counselling as well as taking part in a presentation and write a reflective essay.
This course is useful for CPD for those working with vulnerable people. It also is a stepping stone towards a future in therapeutic and counselling studies and careers.
Most of our learners move on to the Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Studies which prepares them to progress on to a degree or other higher education studies in the counselling field.
For some, this course is a stepping stone to our various level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma. Each learner on this course will discuss their future choice with their tutor and/or other services within the East Lancashire Learning Group.
