Course Information
This course aims to give learners working in or intending to work in Social Care services an understanding of healthcare practice, duty of care and person-centred approaches, to support their role in the workplace.
This course provides an ideal taster for those who may be new to the sector or new to the world of work. It is accessible to learners of all ages who may want to understand more about working in health and social care. It aims to introduce some basic concepts of caring and preparation for employment in the sector.

The qualification covers the areas of communication, equality, diversity and inclusion, personal development, role of the social care worker, handling information, health and safety, safeguarding, duty of care and person-centred approaches.
Learners will develop their knowledge of expectations career options and the skills and attributes required for employment in the Health and Social Care

This qualification aims to:
• Increase understanding of the support needs of individuals and their families
• Increase understanding of regulatory bodies associated with the Health and Social Care sector
• Provide an understanding of the importance of the duty of care and the procedure for handling complaints
• Provide an understanding of person-centred approaches for care and support and how to implement these in an adult social care setting
• Increase understanding of the importance of diversity, equality and inclusion and know how to work in an inclusive way
Learners attend weekly sessions and engage in learning activities to support the learning outcomes. Progressing each week, learning will be structured towards completing both individual and group activities to increase knowledge and understanding which will be assessed using a range of methods.

Further self-directed research is encouraged to expand learner’s understanding of key topics.
Be able to follow written English instructions at Level 1 or above
Ideally have basic IT skills for research, though this isn’t essential
Have no required prior learning, but it may help to have:
A Level 1 Health and Social Care qualification, or
Some relevant experience or related subject knowledge.
Regular submission of work that will be assessed and reviewed weekly. Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge. Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows them to identify how much they have learnt and where they might need to do further study or research. Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on starting points, personal goals and career aspirations. A workbook will be supplied at the start of the course which will be used by the learner to record their knowledge through activities and open questions, which will be submitted at regular points throughout the course. The Additional Learning Support Team work across college supporting students with a variety of learning needs in different ways. Support can be requested at enrolment or at any point throughout your course.
