Course Information
The EAL Level 1 Award in Introductory Welding Skills is a Vocational Related Qualification (VRQ). It has been specifically designed for those who are interested in pursuing a career in the welding engineering sector. The qualification provides learners with a broad-based introduction to the practices and processes relating to metal inert gas welding, skills. It also develops the learner's personal skills and attributes that they need in order to develop confidence in their ability to work, learn and achieve their full potential at Level 1. It takes a hands-on approach and covers basic knowledge and skills required by someone preparing to work in the welding engineering sector.
This unit is intended to ensure the learner has the opportunity to develop the practical skills required to perform Metal Arc Gas Shielded Welding (MAGS) welding in the flat and horizontal/vertical positions. The learner will produce welds and visually assess that they are fit for propose against the requirements of the weld procedure (WPS) provided within the unit internal assessment. Furthermore, the learner will learn the fundamental underpinning knowledge relevant to the MAGS welding process including, safety, use of equipment and choice of consumables.

The learner will:
1. Produce beads on plate in the PA flat position.
2. Produce a lap fillet weld in the PB horizontal/vertical position.
3. Produce a tee fillet weld in the PA flat position.
4. Produce a tee fillet weld in the PB horizontal/vertical position.
5. Produce a corner weld in the PA flat position. 6. Know the process and Health & Safety requirements of MAGS welding.
This course will be delivered within our specialist welding bays at our Nelson and Colne College campus. Tutors will provide feedback on a regular basis.
There are no formal entry requirements for these qualifications. Learners will be initially assessed to ensure they have both the potential to achieve the assessment criteria set out in the qualification units.
The emphasis of the assessment of this qualification is in a ‘hands on’ approach and the final assessment of the units will take the form of practical tasks in the form of welding procedure specifications (WPS) and internally assessed knowledge tests that reflect the learning outcome titles of the units.
Level 2 MIG welding course for a further 10 weeks.
