Course Information
Learn essential life-saving skills.
Lancashire Adult Learning (LAL) are working in partnership with North West Ambulance Service, BBC Radio Lancashire and Lancashire County Council to provide free training as part of the #LancashireLifesaver Campaign. The aim is to train as many people as possible in essential lifesaving skills across the county. This short session is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed if someone suffers a heart attack or a cardiac arrest. The skills will include how to deliver cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on an adult, and how to access and use a defibrillator. Progression is an option but not expected upon completion of this aim.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
1. Discuss the importance of learning emergency life support skills.
2. Describe how to recognise a cardiac arrest and a heart attack.
3. Explain how to assess a casualty using the DRSABC acronym.
4. Demonstrate how to deliver cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
5. Explain how to access and use a defibrillator (AED).
6. Identify appropriate progression opportunities.
Learners will attend either face to face in the classroom or online, with a range of activities involving both group and individual involvement.

During the session they will be learning in a variety of ways:
• Meeting other learners and teacher
• Sharing what has been learnt on the course
• Question and answering techniques
• Engaging in practical activities
• Actively listening, observing and discussing
• Completing online documentation
• Accessing apps and websites for further learning opportunities
Learners should ideally be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 3 and above. A level of mobility and active participation required.
Online learners will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet device with access to the internet, a camera, sound and a microphone.
• The teacher will use a range of activities to review learner’s knowledge throughout the course and identify any gaps and additional information required
• Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge
• Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows them to identify how much they have learnt and where they might need to do further study.
• Learners will also be supported to set an individual target for the course based on personal goals and aspirations.
"If learners are physically able to, there is an opportunity to practise CPR during this session which will involve kneeling on the floor. Learners must let the teacher know if they are unable to participate in the practical activities.
Learners are asked to wear appropriate clothing when participating in the practical floor activities.
Please join the online course 15 mins before the planned start time.
A firm cushion or pillow will be required. This will be used instead of a mannequin when practising the correct technique for CPR at home so the teacher can guide and assess learners on this topic.
The Additional Learning Support Team work across college supporting students with a variety of learning needs in different ways. Support can be requested at enrolment or at any point throughout your course.
Learners will be completing a learning mat to evidence progression which will be completed during the session. This can be emailed by the teacher prior to the session for those accessing the online version of the course.
Following completion of this course the following progression opportunities are available:
Basic Lifesaving Skills
Basic Awareness of Paediatric First Aid
Unaccredited Emergency First Aid training
Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)
Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)
