Course Information

Course Information
This free course (for Lancashire residents) will provide learners with the knowledge and basic lifesaving skills needed to assess and respond to a child or infant that is unresponsive and not breathing. The skills will include how to deliver cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a child and baby and how to access and use a defibrillator. Learners will also be able to recognise and treat choking. This course can be accessed either as a live online course or alternatively in a classroom face to face.
By the end of the session, learners will be able to:
1. Demonstrate how to perform a primary survey.
2. Demonstrate the correct technique for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for a child and baby.
3. Discuss how to access and use a defibrillator.
4. Recognise and respond to choking.
5. Access apps, websites for further learning.
6. Identify appropriate progression opportunities.
Learners can access the course planned to attend either in person in a classroom environment or live online.

During the session they will be learning in a variety of ways:
• Learning from their peers/teacher
• Sharing what has been learnt on the course
• Question and answering techniques
• Engaging in practical activities
• Actively listening, observing and discussing
• Completing documentation
• Accessing apps and websites for further learning opportunities
• Ability to follow verbal and written English instructions at Entry Level 3 or above
• Some practical tasks requiring mobility and active participation
• Computer, laptop or tablet with internet access
• Device must have a camera, sound and microphone for interaction
The teacher will use a range of activities to review learner’s knowledge throughout the course and identify any gaps and additional information required. Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge. Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows them to identify how much they have learnt and where they might need to do further study or research. Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations. Learners will be completing a learning mat to evidence progression which will be completed during the session. This can be emailed by the teacher prior to the session for those accessing the online version of the course.

Classroom - If learners are physically able to, there is an opportunity to practise CPR during this session which may involve kneeling on the floor. Learners must let the teacher know if they are unable to participate in the practical activities. Learners are asked to wear appropriate clothing when participating in the practical floor activities.

Online - Please join the online course 15 mins before the planned start time. A large cushion or firm pillow will be required for practising the child CPR techniques. If learners have a doll or teddy these can used instead of a manikin when practising the correct techniques for smaller children and babies. Alternatively, a pillow or cushion can be used. The teacher will guide and assess learners during these activities. The Additional Learning Support Team work across college supporting students with a variety of learning needs in different ways.  Support can be requested at enrolment or at any point throughout your course

• L3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid (face to face accredited)
