Course Information
Learning about health and actively caring for your well-being is essential as it directly impacts on your quality of life. Understanding issues related to health will empower you to make informed choices about your lifestyle, diet, and exercise as well as helping to reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Prioritising your health and wellbeing will help lead to improved physical, mental and emotional resilience - Invest in your health!
The course has been designed for learners who have English as their second language therefore communication skills, as well as English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening will be developed on the course. The wider skills that will underpin this curriculum include working together, producing written work, following instructions; presenting information to a group and focusing on specific health campaigns to improve own health and wellbeing. At the end of the course, learners will be able to:
- Examine the importance of and develop strategies to support good mental health
- Use the 5 ways to wellbeing to improve own health and wellbeing
- Recognise and explain diseases that affect women and state the importance of early identification and prevention
- Discuss the positive impact of physical activity and exercise on health and create an exercise plan to increase own activity levels
- Explore the main types of cancer affecting women and the national screening programmes established to detect early signs and symptoms
- Examine what can happen to women during the different stages of the menopause and recognise ways of managing symptoms throughout
- Identify appropriate progression opportunities and next steps
If attending an online course: Learners attend via the online platform Microsoft Teams or Zoom on a set day and time. The sessions will be delivered live, and learners will be supported to work through the course content in their own homes. If attending in a community venue:Learners will attend a specific venue on a set day and time as advertised. Learners will complete written learning activities within a course booklet, and in addition to this, learners will be given access to a course Padlet, Moodle (VLE – Virtual Learning Environment) or other recommended websites. This enables activities can be completed during and between sessions to record progress and achievement.
Learners who speak English as a second or other language will complete an initial assessment of their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. In order to attend the course, learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 2 and above. The course will be delivered in a class in a community venue. If attending an online course: Learners will need a basic level of IT skills to be able to access the course and follow online instructions. If training or support is needed, please enquire about our free ICT courses. Learners will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet device with access to the internet.  All devices should have a camera, sound and a microphone so they are able to interact with their teacher and peers during the course. The course will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams or zoom and learners will be sent the join details and links prior to the course. Both of these online platforms can be accessed via an app on a smart phone, tablet or iPad or alternatively via the relevant website.
Learners will be submitting work via Moodle (Virtual Learning Platform) wherever possible. Learners will also be expected to complete homework in the form of worksheets and research tasks on specific health topics.
In order for the course to start on time, it’s important to be ready to join your course 5 – 10 minutes prior to the official start time. For all courses, it would be useful to have a pen and paper so you can make notes throughout the course.   The college has an Additional Learning Support Team who can support students with a variety of learning needs. If you have a diagnosed additional learning need or feel you may need additional support to successfully complete this course, please speak to your course teacher upon enrolment.  

The course is 2.5 hours per session and is delivered over 6 weeks
