Take your next step in English and in college life.
If English isn’t your first language and you want to build your skills while enjoying life at college, the Entry Level 2 ESOL Pathway could be your perfect next step.

The main focus of this course is improving all four English skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. You’ll practise using English in everyday situations—chatting with friends, understanding information, writing short texts, and building vocabulary and grammar to help you feel more confident.

But ESOL at college is about more than just language. Alongside your English lessons, you’ll explore vocational tasters in different subject areas. You’ll also develop key life and study skills such as digital safety, citizenship, communication, and teamwork. These tasters help you find out what interests you most and give you an idea of what you might want to study next.

At Nelson & Colne College, ESOL is sometimes part of broader , introductory programmes which are tailored to your needs and combine English with practical and personal development to give you a strong foundation for the future.

There are no qualifications needed to join—your starting level will be decided by an initial assessment. After completing Entry Level 2, you can progress onto Entry 3 or above, moving closer to vocational study or even employment opportunities.

If you’re ready to improve your English and take your next step at college, this course will get you started.
The Entry Level 2 ESOL Pathway is delivered through classroom lessons, practical activities, and everyday communication tasks. In college, you’ll build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, focusing on vocabulary and grammar for daily life and study. Lessons are interactive, using role play, group work, and real-life scenarios to practise English in context. The pathway also supports employability and personal development, preparing you for further ESOL study, vocational training, or work opportunities while improving your independence and communication skills.
There are no formal entry criteria for this course but you will need to display a clear aspiration to progress into the world of work. Prior to starting this course you will need to complete an initial assessment.
Assessment for Entry Level 2 ESOL Pathway is continuous and based on practical tasks rather than formal exams. You’ll complete reading, writing, and speaking activities, as well as listening tasks, to show your progress in real-life communication. Tutors will assess your development through observation, assignments, and feedback, ensuring you achieve your individual goals. Small, regular assessments help track your improvement and build confidence. This supportive approach recognises your achievements and prepares you for progression to Entry Level 3 ESOL, further study, or employment-focused courses.
Studying ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) gives you the language skills and confidence to unlock new opportunities in education, work, and everyday life. Once you have developed your English skills, you will be ready to move into sectors such as customer service, retail, hospitality, construction, or care, where good communication is key and opportunities are wide-ranging.

ESOL is also an excellent springboard to further study, including vocational courses at Levels 1, 2, and 3, and eventually university. With strong English skills, you could progress to professional careers such as Nurse, Teacher, Business Manager, Social Worker, or IT Specialist. Some learners go on to apprenticeships or skilled employment, applying their English in practical and professional contexts.

Learning English opens doors. Whether your ambition is to continue into further education, train for a specific career, or build a future in the UK, ESOL equips you with the essential skills for success. It is the first step towards achieving your goals, gaining independence, and making a difference in your life and the lives of others.
