Ever wondered how data really works, or why statistics are behind so many big decisions in science, business, and everyday life? A Level Statistics takes you beyond the basics of maths and shows you how to make sense of the numbers that shape our world.

You’ll explore loads of key areas that bring data to life. In Statistical Sampling, you’ll learn the importance of collecting good, random data and how to spot patterns and limitations in a dataset. Data Presentation and Interpretation gives you the tools to represent information clearly through charts, histograms, box plots, and more—while also teaching you how to deal with tricky issues like outliers and skewed data.

In Probability, you’ll use Venn diagrams, tree diagrams and set notation to calculate the chances of different outcomes, including conditional probability. You’ll then move on to Statistical Distributions, where you’ll get to grips with the Binomial and Normal distributions—powerful tools for predicting real-world events and analysing results. A Level Statistics is delivered through a blend of classroom teaching, problem-solving workshops, and applied tasks, giving you the chance to explore data handling, probability, and statistical modelling while learning how to apply these skills to real-world situations.
3 GCSE passes at a minimum of Grade 4 and 2 at Grade 5, which must include English Language at Grade 4 and Maths at Grade 5.
A Level Statistics is assessed through two written exams, each lasting 2 hours and worth 50% of the final grade, taken at the end of the two-year course. Each paper covers a range of topics, including statistical sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions (like binomial and normal), and hypothesis testing. Questions range from short, structured problems to longer applied tasks where you analyse data and justify conclusions. Assessments focus on your ability to handle data confidently, apply statistical methods, and use logical reasoning to solve real-world problems.

The standard fee for anyone living outside of the LCCA funded area (e.g. if your home address is in the Greater Manchester devolved funded area) is charged at £12.10 per hour, but may be higher for some courses.
